Hey OP I'm glad you were unhurt and sorry your smart was crashed. Hopefully it'll be on the mend very soon! Good luck!

I'm pretty sure this isn't the place for discussions like this, but I do hope you don't relegate all non-English speaking people to non-legal residency status.

Not speaking any English meant I could not communicate with him until the police showed. He had an insurance card he showed, but when the police called to verified there were no payments made and the coverage was canceled. He got the card just long enough to get plates and inspection. I, of course, have uninsured coverage but will be out the $500 deductsble and more important without the car waiting parts. Who knows how long that will be. The police impounded his van and say he can not retrieve until he can provide proof of insurance. They also wrote him a ticket for no insurance and will notify the state, which is suppose to suspend his license for 1 year.

My real question to him, which he did not understand, was if you are driving without insurance why in the world were you driving so wreckless?

Has anyone else noticed other drivers sure seem to be aggressive around smart cars? Afraid you'll bet them off the line, get ahead of them in traffic, break their necks to pass you?

At least up here in these circumstances you can sue them for your deductible.
Collecting the money after you win on the other hand is pretty hit or miss.

Haven't noticed that happening here yet. Phew! Most of the time its people gawking at the car drifting over.

Sorry to hear about the accident, glad you are okay. It is amazing how recklessly people still drive even if they don't have insurance - logic dictates they would be more careful considering but logic clearly has no bearing on idiot drivers.

All in all I have not noticed more then normal aggression towards the Smart with a few exceptions that are not really clear (meaning they might have been just the same were I in any other car). The thing is the road is filled with crappy drivers not stopping at signs, running lights, riding my butt not paying attention, cutting across 2 lanes to make an immediate turn, etc and I find that they some will to beat whatever it or intimidate me no matter I'm driving - none of our vehicles are massive and looking like they can't stop well so they give it a go consequences be damned..

It is a sad commentary on our society that one of the most dangerous things we do each day is drive a car. And it doesn't matter what kind of car you drive. It's still "Russian Roulette" out there. Sorry you got crunched, but glad to see the Smart is still standing.

That would be the same society that has managed to reduce deaths due to tuberculosis, influenza, and pneumonia from 396.6 per 100,000 of population in 1900 to 21.1 per 100,000. Motor vehicle accidents by the way is 15.0 per 100,000 of population.

Perhaps it is a very happy commentary on our society that cars are one of the more dangerous things now.

Anyway, as to the original poster, I am very glad you were not badly hurt and hope your cute little smart gets back up and going soon.

Really? Does that figure include the world's population including those without cars perhaps? I honestly just do not think that number reflects the reality of many accidents happening in most US cities. Or perhaps it is just stating fatalities by motor vehicle (which would not reflect injury statistics if you could even really garner those accurately) - if so, IMHO, danger doesn't have to equate to death only.

As for the figures re:disease, I would think that the reduced numbers is a good reflection on science/research/doctors and the distribution of vaccines and treatments vs the society at large encompassing the environment of distraction and poor judgement leading to incidents on the road ;)
