Excuse me, you know I'm new here, but I was thinking that the Smart Car would be inexpensive. I've driven them in Europe quite a bit and, as I recall, they were generally the least expensive option. Is it just because they're still being introduced to the US and demand is greater than supply? Shouldn't they eventually be among the least expensive cars on the road?
In case you have not rented a car lately, most rental places have not changed there pricing but their availability has changed. While a car like the Smart will catch a premium because of its availability, most rental counters have an excess of SUV's and a shortage of fuel efficient cars. They almost always “Upgrade” you these days weather you want that bigger car or not.
I just called Avon Car Rental in Beverly Hills (310 277 4455) and got 2 quotes from Carlos: the smart cabrio goes for $149/ day but he said I could have it for $135; the coupe goes for $99/ day but he brought it down to $89.
