It's quite possible the 330i gets better gas mileage, just depends how you drive it. Top Gear did a comparison about a week or two ago between an M3 and a Prius. They ran both as fast as the Prius can go around a track for 10 laps and the Prius got 17.2mpg, the M3 got 19.4mpg. I would bet that if you ran your Smart at full speed on a track, I'm not sure it would do better than the 330i. But lets talk real life, I get about 26mpg around town in my Smart and get about 24mpg around town with my MB C230 Kompressor, not what you would call a huge difference. Lucky for me, I did not buy this car for it's fuel consumption, otherwise I would not be happy as I used to get much better fuel mileage from my old MB 190D, both city and highway. If I had to chose a car today solely on fuel consumption, hands down I would get the 2009 Jetta TDI.

I can tell you without a doubt that my smart car gets much better gas mileage. 35 for smart and about 22 on 330i.
