Smart Car vs. Toyota Prius, sales numbers...

See Link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Prius

You'll have to drop down to, "Monthly U.S. sales", to see the data, but if you look at the total sales per year, you'll see:

Total US Sales By Year
---------------------------------------------------
2000 = 5,562 (July - December)
2001 = 15,556
2002 = 20,119
2003 = 24,627
2004 = 53,991
2005 = 107,897
2006 = 115,563
2007 = 167,010 (January - November)
---------------------------------------------------

If we look at the number for the Smart Car pre-sales allotment, we can see that the Smart Car sales for 2008 will beat the Prius for 2001. Keep in mind as more people purchased the Prius, others became interested in the car.

So, odds are very good that in the upcoming years the Smart Car should do even better than the Prius. After all, it's about 1/2 the cost of the Prius and get about 75 - 80% of the millage of the Prius.

And the smart has 1/2 the seating capacity.

We own a 2007 Prius and our second car will be the smart. Frankly the Prius is more car, more room, same mileage, but more expensive. The smart will get about the same mileage, and is cheaper, but you can't haul as much.

No question that the Smart Seats a maximum of 2 and the Prius seats 4 or 5 people. (3 small people in the rear seat is possible.) However, if you look at cars on the road around town, more than 90% of the time, it's a solo driver.

To me the Smart is going to be the second car to work or local trips around town. (My wife and I also own a Prius, which we are going to keep until the day is dies an unrecoverable death.) While it might be interesting to take a Smart on a long trip, in reality, the Prius is the better car for long trips.

I wonder by this time next year, how many Smart owners will also own a Prius?

But it's thrice the price of a golf cart, and not even 1/10 as much fun.

[QUOTE=I wonder by this time next year, how many Smart owners will also own a Prius?

I certainly wont get a prius, rather get the new volt, looks better and more sporty looking also.

but the kicker is im worried about the heafty price tag for the battery replacement, my freind had a 2002 prius out of warranty and he needed a new battery replacement and it costed him almost $5700 dollers which freaked him out as he wasnt aware that the battery has a 10 to 12 year life cycle. his died early which suprised me as i thought toyota had an exstended warranty for the battery?

the volt the same issue applies how much is it going to cost when the battery dies! it would seem that any savings that either car gives you will all be capute when the battery needs replacing, especially if you buy a used Prius or volt.

I'm wondering when this starts being a problem when the older cars start having battery failures I bet the resale value for older prius's will fall off the map.

What our your thoughts?
