The SMART that could have been!!!

FROM ALLPAR SITE:

The Dodge Sling Shot / Slingshot concept car (2004)

Based on a smart, the Sling Shot combines very cool looks with strong gas mileage and acceleration similar to many less efficient cars - that is, up to 45 miles per gallon with 0-60 times of about 10 seconds.
Dodge Sling Shot is designed for open-air driving with a main roof panel and side rails over the passenger area that can be stored in the trunk (Sling Shot has two storage areas), while a canvas roof panel can slide back and out of the way like a roll top desk for open-air driving.
Sling Shot features a rear-mounted, 3-cylinder, gasoline engine that is tuned to deliver 100 bhp with a power to weight ratio of 17.4 lbs/bhp. A five-speed gearbox, rack-and-pinion steering, four-wheel independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes complete the driver-oriented characteristics contributing to the Sling Shot's efficient, responsive and fun-to-drive personality.
Dodge Sling Shot concept car test drive

The concept is surprisingly fast (especially given that it is a concept car!), with great sound from the exhaust. The 1.3 liter engine responds quickly and then the supercharger comes in smoothly, but making its presence very clear.
The Sling Shot has a sequential gearshift like the reborn-and-rekilled Toyota MR2 (you start from the middle, the engine starts itself automatically, you move to the drive region, and push - to get to first, then + to move forward.
It is hard to get into the cramped interior; but it’s sporty once you’re there. There’s no room behind the seats. Dodge marketing people wrote, “the Dodge Sling Shot concept has an interior design influenced by the legacy of Dodge and Chrysler's performance past.”
The ride better than would expect but still quite firm. It handles well, especially for a concept. It's definitely based on smart underneath - it was originally designed as a question of whether to rebody a smart as a Dodge, but that’s been dropped.
In person, the Sling Shot is quite cool looking through the front is rather Porsche, with a classic Charger-style high-mounted gas cap on the side.
Overall, if priced well, this might have been a winner, but pricing would probably have been a problem given the need to upgrade safety to American standards and the added weight that would bring. The death of the Smart car the Slingshot is based on probably spells its final death knell, but it was still an interesting design study. Of particular interest, stylistcally, is the use of different colors in the interior than shades of gray: yellow gauges with bright red areas, and greenish-blue dash covers.

The death of the smart car is somewhat exaggerated. Maybe they mean the "divorce" between Chrysler and Daimler has made the smart chassis unavailable to Dodge? Interesting concept though.

I don't think that was exaggerated. The Dodge was based on the smart Roadster, which is to all intents and purposes dead. I know smart sold the tooling to a small UK based company, but I haven't seen anything come of that yet.

Is there any roadster at all on the Smart horizon? Had to sell the Passion because of the high profile and center of gravity (unstable at freeway speeds). We really had always wanted a Brabus Roadster.

lhoboy... sorry you had to sell your car. Not sure what freeway you drove on, but I have almost 9000 miles on mine driving mostly freeway and have had no problems with instability.... and I am not sure whether you refer to lots of stares..... concerning the high profile or the height.... seems to work .... keep waiting for the roadster... don't think one is on the horizon for smart... but look to the skye or honda 2000 or other such cars...

At 65mph (our speed limit) and 70mph (when in Indiana their speed limit) haven't noticed any instability. 5,000+ miles driven.

Hard for me to see how this related to a smart. . .

"It is hard to get into the cramped interior; but it’s sporty once you’re there. There’s no room behind the seats."

That doesn't sound like it was ever based on a smart - unless they're talking about small rear engine, rear drive "smart-type" vehicle. . .
Naaah, they couldn't put a Hemi in it anyway - no use for Dodge to build these.

Go to the Mexico Chapter and look at the Gallery; there, you will find a roadster among our Passions and Cabrios when the Guadalajara gang last got together and others.:

Not true, I contacted Dodge directly when the Roadster was still in production, they said they had no intention of producing it as it would interfere with sales of the smart Roadster and at the time (I don't know about now), there was a link between DC and Dodge.

When the Roadster was cancelled there was a chance they could have made it but as you know, car companies rarely go back to old designs.

I can assure you that more than 50% of the parts used to make the Slingshot where from a Roadster. If you look at some interior pictures you will notice, amongst other things:-

Same:
gearchange paddles,
stereo,
trip computer,
centre console button position,
heater controls,
central locking/hazard lights/heated seats dash top buttons,
key,
indicator and wiper stalks,
seats,
ignition,
interior door handles,
roof bars,
boot hinges,
handbrake,
gearchange unit (although disguised)
etc

and these are just the things we can see in the photographs.
