I got my orphan from SMART CENTER OF BUCKHEAD in Ga and there was no add-ons. I am 100% satisfied.
But even if there was added on moddifications I see no problem with it. Im happy to see that dealers are customizing their Smarts all over the US. It takes the work out for us and saves us time.
If you want a smart with no add ons you have that option and if you refuse to have a car with an add on then just wait patiently till your car arrives then you will have what you wanted.
They have orphans, and forced addons... I almost purchased an orphan, they had special wheels and GPS system... jacked the priced up almost $2500 I was able to get them to agree to remove GPS, but not wheels. The deal ended up going belly up anyway... they refused to work with me on a trade-in...

Sorry to hear the place you went to would not work with you on your trade in. Again if you want a car with no mods or add ons then you need to look at waiting for a reserved one. If not then that is liable to happen. Its like complaining about a used car. Even if its 5 days old or 30 days old the previous owner could have modded it. So if you want it like you want it order it the way you want it with configuration and you will be happy.
If you can't wait then be flexible.
Sometimes if you wait some orphans tend to have less mods or add ons then others so just stay on it and in due time you will get one that makes you happy.
I called the smart Tampa dealer and told the salesman who answered that I would like to be placed on their 'orphan list.' He proceeded to tell me that it was 'very long - over 400 names' - I told him 'fine, just add me.'
Two hours later the phone rings - it's the same salesman. "Got an orphan you may want." He proceeds to tell me all about it: metallic red, with a 'special' red interior, etc. etc. (It was a basic red & silver Passion, nothing special.)
BUT it also had a 'very special'OUTDOOR ADVENTURE package - WoW! This consisted of a 'special' stainless steel cooler, backpack, smart t-shirt and cap, "Special" tent and some other assorted small geegaws. So I asked him the price . . . 'only $19,280' he replies. I laughed and told him I wouldn't be very interested. . . not at almost $5000 over list. He was funny with his "special" this and "special" that . . . LOL.
I have my smart on order from the Tulsa Oklahoma dealer. I asked the sales lady there about the add-ons they put on the Orphans. She told me they only add floor mats and sometimes will tint the windows. Looking at only a few hundred dollars for add-ons is something I can live with.
Coral Gables Best Service I have ever recieved in car dealership. Doesn't feel like a ordinary dealer, nice, friendly, and very professional sales people. I recommended to pass by and enjoy good service, and a good time.
My blue/silver/black orphaned passion from Riverside, CA had a dealer added Kenwood Stereo. I was told it has GPS, Bluetooth, satellite radio, DVD, blah blah... the price: $2,500 additional. Did I pay? Yes! After picking up my baby, I found out the Bluetooth and satellite are Bluetooth/satellite READY and require about $300 additional pieces of equipment. I also found out the exact stereo is $900 at Best Buy and the install would have been $100. I'm adding on the additional stuff, but I am feeling a little taken advantage of in the markup/install-by-the-dealer department. At least I wasn't on the list long... about 2 months.
smart center of Pittsburgh added nothing to my orphan. I added floor mats and the privacy screen/separator for the cargo area. There was no pressure from them and no hidden costs. They have been a complete pleasure and completely professional to deal with.
