I remember doing some research on this topic before my smart came in and there were a couple models where it would work driving over the wheel wells using blocks (as others have mentioned). Payload and bed rail width were alright on the HD long beds. Of course, the F150 and RAM have changed over the last year, but I'm sure there's still something that would work.

How do you open the doors of the Smart, when its in the pickup bed?? If its a soft top you could claim out the top. I guess you could pop the hatch in the rear of a coupe.

Ok, to do this you would need a full size pick up bed. Most likely if you have a full size bed you don't have an exended cab so you are only carrying two people.
Woudln't it be more efficant to just drive the smart. Or two for that matter

This is Maxwel in a local parade, and that is a 6' bed, in an 8' you can close the tailgate with a 450.
The car is sitting higher because we loaded it with a hoist. With ramps you can make the blocks 4" or 5" below the fender wells and still clear the door sill. This would allow the car to sit much lower for longer distance travel.

Here's a fellow that got creative with a 450 and a truck bed.

Wow, this site is great. Two pages of responses in 1 day. GREAT PHOTOS!

I have a full size (8' bed) Ram with a Cummins Diesel. I have loaded a ton of wood pellets in the truck on several occasions (2 ton once ) and it doesn't really effect fuel economy too badly (wind on the other hand...).

I was more curious than actually considering it. Loading a Smart and hooking to my travel trailer would definitely put me over weight (adding the tongue weight).

The closest Smart dealer is in Buffalo (2 hours on the Thruway). I suspect I'd get a flat bed trailer. They are handy for hauling other things as well (tractors, pellets, snowblower...).
