Sure, it's great there's a backlog, but if it's too long, those customers may opt for another brand. It's better to have a healthy balance with the scales tipped slightly toward higher demand. Most customers won't defect over a 3- to 6-month wait, but at 22 months, I'll bet there would be few left. At nearly two years of driving, someone looking to replace their 13MPG truck (or whatever) could be losing a lot of money waiting.
As for trucks, they have their place, too. There's one in my garage. But, unless circumstances force me, I don't drive it to work. We've used it to haul stuff, dump stuff, tow stuff and move the family of five places. But the smart was purchased to give us an option to drive a high mileage vehicle. And in our house, whoever has to drive the farthest drives the smart. And in good weather, I ride my motorcycle, which just edges the smart in MPG.
