Not to answer for somebody else, buuuuut... I earn a living selling truck accessories but it drives me crazy to see so many single-occupant 7,000lb vehicles on the road. I'm certainly not an Eco Nazi, but a little more responsible behavior is called for. And I parked a 4,600lb Trooper to drive the smart. Still need the Trooper because as part of our business we must tow fairly heavy trailers but otherwise it's getting a rest.

smartCenter Seattle got a huge delivery the week that I picked mine up... they were stacked 2-deep in all of the parking spaces (lol... only smart cars can do that...) and it did very much look like they had a ton of 'em available to sell. Someone came in while I was doing paperwork and asked about it, and they reply was the same as everyone's posting here - "no, sorry, those are all sold and just awaiting delivery."

Sure, it's great there's a backlog, but if it's too long, those customers may opt for another brand. It's better to have a healthy balance with the scales tipped slightly toward higher demand. Most customers won't defect over a 3- to 6-month wait, but at 22 months, I'll bet there would be few left. At nearly two years of driving, someone looking to replace their 13MPG truck (or whatever) could be losing a lot of money waiting.

As for trucks, they have their place, too. There's one in my garage. But, unless circumstances force me, I don't drive it to work. We've used it to haul stuff, dump stuff, tow stuff and move the family of five places. But the smart was purchased to give us an option to drive a high mileage vehicle. And in our house, whoever has to drive the farthest drives the smart. And in good weather, I ride my motorcycle, which just edges the smart in MPG.

I was at the dealership today and there was a man and wife looking around. They wanted to purchase a smart car. Then they found out they had to place a reservation. For about 10 more minutes they looked at the cars inside and sat in them. Before leaving the man said, "Really wanted one 10 minutes ago until we found out about the wait... too bad." The way I figured it that meant one less person in line who didn't really want it to begin with.
