I like the 'it is mine' option. My ancestors came from elsewhere but I was born in the USA.. I was born in Indiana but I live in NJ. I think of myself as a New Jerseyian. My Smart Fortwo was made elsewhere but it is mine now. I really like my little car no matter where it is from.
The Alsace region of present day France has been contested between Germany and France for centuries. The Germans today like to buy land over the border, because its cheaper, shop in the French shops and send their children to French schools. German is spoken by a large percentage of the population. The French travel across the German border daily for work.
This was another case of the Germans looking to buy some cheap real estate, build a factory and employ French who needed work to build a German car.

Lo mio es puro méxicano, purchased in Guadalajara, but I'm from the northern tip of NYS, traveled, worked or lived in most states and over 30 other countries, have had German, American and French cars with most being German, Sailed four of the seven seas and don't really give a damn; I just like my Smart a lot.
Interesting to see how people perceive their cars.
In my eyes it is French, but then I see the Honda Accord and Nissan Altima as American, the VW's of Puebla as Mexican and my BMW's as German. For me it is about where it is made. Other thing for me too is the materials and the soul of the car. Having owned many French cars, I recognized the smell of the smart and its charachter immediately as distinctively French. If you have not had Peugeots and Citroens and Renaults of the last couple decades, you might not recognize it. However, I think you could make a valid argument for any of the possibilities, but it all comes down to how you see it.
I was born in Jersey, and so will always be from Jersey, no matter where I go or how long I live there. The smart is born in France, and so, for me, will always be French.
It can depend upon your audience. If you are trying to pick up women with it, it's French, la voiture adorable. (Okay, can't get linux box to do the accent over the 'e'). If a bunch of guys are inquiring, it's German -- precision-engineering, refinement, quality, etc.
