seems like from my car magazine writing the following statements have been printed more than once by those 'knowledgable' folks:
No harm will come to your engine running a quality regular unleaded gasoline in your car as the computers will adjust for the lower octane. Purchasing premium octane is a waste of money.
You can achieve a higher octane rating by mixing 1/2 tank of regular unleaded with 1/2 tank of mid-grade because the octane ratings are an AVERAGE, and the mixing actually results in a higher AVERAGE octane rating than the 91 premium fuel.
Now, I can't swear either is fact, other than I know I read them. I used the blending theory in my Mercedes for several years with no adverse impact and use only regular in my VW (also rated for premium). I noticed neither degraded performance or fuel economy.
The only place I DON'T use regular in the VW is when traveling in Mexico where the lower grade fuel will clog the injectors within 500 miles and ruin the catalytic converter within 5000 miles.
