(actually any RV owner should do this, but that's a different subject).
The hitch and RV are rated at towing 40,000 #s and 5000#s of tongue weight. I'd think an 1800# Smart is not a factor. Do you know what the weight distribution is supposed to be?

No, I don't know what the optimal weight dist. should be. In any set up, the tires are the weakest link. Another thing to look at is the load capacity of the axles.

I hear RV'rs all the time saying "this is rated for that" and "I'm nowhere near my GCVW." I always ask "have you been over some scales?" Most would be surprised how close (or over) they are to the tow vehicles "legal" capacity. Granted you do have a commercial chassis.

I'm not criticizing you. I think that set up is great. It is also a good way to cheat toll roads that charge extra when you are towing (extra axles).

I guess I'm just a data head. I like to know things. If nothing else its good camp fire conversation.

I carry mine in a 22' Toyhauler.

It's close, but fits and tows well.

UPDATE: I put 11 hours of drive time on this setup over the weekend. In Branson, Mo I was bombarded with onlookers while I unloaded. The Smart did great in the Ozark hills btw. After a couple days we headed back to OK for the U2 concert. OKs roads are terrible compared to MO and the carrier didn't move at all. U2 was hands down the best concert I've ever seen! Overall my fuel mileage in the RV was unchanged. Towing a trailer always costed 2 mpg. I saved $7 in tolls compared to towing a trailer. I'm a happy camper!
