Ok, so they cant void the warranty if you move. Doesn't matter. But there are places in Canada that could service it closer than Washington. You cant tell a customer not to move to a region because you wont cover the warenty. Not like its a different country. Shouldn't mater anyway.
Every North America 451 version sold is California Emissions compliant
24 month 24,000 mile warranty is one issue. And the company can flag a VIN to deny warrant for most things.
BUT, they may not, under any owner or location circumstance, deny the emissions warranty (Federal Laws mandated and extends the emissions areas to 60 months or longer)
The one exception to the emissions warranty, regardless to location, is if the vehicle has been modified in any way that impacts the various emissions sub systems. In that case the company can deny a warranty claim of Federally mandated manufacturer emissions related items like the catalytic converter, vapor management subsystems etc. And if we are in a smog test area then to legally use the vehicle we must have the repair doen at our own cost. Hard to do for some of the items without Dealer support (parts and software).
Bottom line is, smartUSA and Mercedes Benz know they are on the hook for warranty issues and they have decided to not knowingly sell cars to citizens in areas that will cost them enormous vehicle transport costs.
No doubt if I move to Ft Greeley AK from Ft Hood TX and take my two, still in warranty smart cars up there, I still have full coverage within the terms of the original written contract.
I am also certain if either of those cars developed a warranty repair concern, then most likely smartUSA would need to consider cost to ship my car to Seattle vs. cost of sending a Technician to me and work the problem from a more local Mercedes dealer shop. I also accept that in this case I can expect a LOT of foot dragging and long delays getting my car back in running order
These issues make it even more important that we continue the pressure to get MB to release much more comprehensive manuals and software support to private owners and independent repair shops
until last year there where zero places that you could buy and get one serviced here. Where is the outrage and threats of class action lawsuits Apatera won't sell me a car in NJ... I remember Ford and GM bending over backward helping us with our cars in Europe but then they had a corporate presence there. If I take my car to Alaska why should all the other buyers subsidize my stupid choice? You think if you drive it to Honduras and it quits that road service is going to pick you up. Life would suck without dreams you have to wake up to actually live.

Why does everyone seem to think a MB dealer would have anything to do with this car. I live in a region of the country where we have Smart Centers as independant dealers. They have no relationships with the MB dealers.
I guess its a warning to those of you who may travel outside your territory, know who the Smart dealers are before you travel, THe MB dealers here would just look at you cross eyed. I would have better luck in my area going to the Hummer dealer because they are under the same Automotive group as my Smart center
Maybe because the car is built by MB Cars AG and MB USA LLC sells that (MB) brand here in the US and fail to realize they are two different companies.
I promise that is the last time I will post that.

hi george. I'm getting an orphan from smart center seattle. new car warranty won't work here, but I am getting the 4 year extended warranty for an extra $1100. paying sticker price plus cost of extended warranty, shipping via amhs for $481. should see me driving around a white/black/red int. smart on 11/24. have girlfriend call there and inquire about orphans, they seem to get new orphans often. when i got mine, they had 4 or 5. They might not want to ship via ferry system after mine because it leaves out of bellingham. northland sevices barge would be $656. good luck!
why do you ask "Why does everyone seem to think a MB dealer would have anything to do with this car"
when the "everyone" in this thread is ME Fredvon4 making a point in a very confined circumstance....
as in IF I move to Alaska and take my two under warranty smarts there. PAG and Mercedes Benz are responsible for the repairs for the 24/24,000 period, or longer if a emission item. PAG is a only middleman as the exclusive importer to USA.
Your point is valid... ONLY smart centers licensed and contracted to PAG are AUTHORIZED to do warranty work on this cars
Penske Auto Group (PAG)
However in determining the best way to execute THEIR contractual responsibility they can decide to NOT ship my car back the the lower 48 and temp authorize a closer Mercedes Benz dealer to repair my car. They might even send a trained tech there to do that
The Parent company to the smart brand is Mercedes Benz and it is MB that carries the warranty liability for this product.
I take back part of post # 7 above where I suggest if you buy a smart in Seattle and take it to Alaska and it breaks then you need to get it back to smart Center Seattle region for repairs. Non sense and not sure why I was bent on that notion.
There are plenty of soldiers buying this car and absolutely possible one or more smarts makes it to Puerto Rico, Alaska, or Hawaii...with warranty coverage still in force.
Maybe because the car is built by MB Cars AG and MB USA LLC sells that (MB) brand here in the US and fail to realize they are two different companies.
I promise that is the last time I will post that.

Karl, it's actually smart USA Distributor LLC (part of the Penske Auto Group) that imports our cars into the US. So, strictly a "hands off" situation for Mercedes Benz/Daimler. Same as the good old days when BMWs were imported by Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City.
I happen to know that my dealer when working through the secondary IAC valve issue was negotiating with PAG / smartUSA for the Part availability logistics only. The Techs were directly dealing with Mercedes Benz Germany on the fault isolation and proper repair procedure.
And on some of the warranty items the part MUST be mailed back to Mercedes Benz Germany.... smartUSA LLC is ONLY a middle man and holds zero warranty liability. They are simply the facilitators and middle man for processing the warranty paper work to get the dealer reimbursed for shop hours and parts.
In fact my dealer parts buddy tells me on some items he has to notify MB directly before doing the work to see if there are field notes to consider or if a rebuild is more proper vs. a replacement of the end assy
He also tell me the PAG is the toad in the road for some of this stuff because they want to be in the warranty repair loop but they do not have the final word
