Human nature is endlessly fascinating - why do so many get pleasure out of putting others down, as in "you're driving a death trap"! Fact is, anyone driving a smart is a lot safer than in the crap they were driving back in the 70's and 80's.
Safety is mostly an illusion because life is inherently risky. Case in point, I was hit on my ten speed by a full size van running a stop sign. I was damn lucky to have got away with a few scrapes. Now, it would seem I would be a lot safer if I stayed locked in my bedroom than riding my bike, but I probably would be ten years dead from a coronary with my family history. So I take a few risks to ride my bike, get my exercise and enjoy life.
Similarly, I could be driving a Hummer instead of the smart. Yeah, I might be safer in the case of certain accidents that could happen. I would also be a slave to the bank for four times as long. I would go half crazy trying to park downtown. I would lose sleep over the resale value and whether GM is gonna be around to fix it in a year or two. It would drive like a pig and I would feel guilty about harming the planet. And after all that, I could still be killed on my bike or crossing the street.
Everything we do in life involves compromise. Intelligent people look at all sides of an issue to make their choice. Dumb people only see one side, and will never understand.
