Carjacking suspect taken into custody
thanks to GPS

Guidepoint works with Vancouver police to recover the vehicle quickly

VANCOUVER, WA - A Vancouver woman who was carjacked has her vehicle back thanks to the car's Guidepoint System (GPS).

Police were called to a Fred Meyer grocery store on Grand Boulevard to investigate a carjacking. The 22-year old woman said a man put a knife to her throat and stole her 2005 Honda Accord.

The victim told police her vehicle was equipped with Guidepoint. Police called Guidepoint's stolen vehicle recovery center at 1-877-GPS-FIND and worked with a recovery specialist to locate the vehicle. Within 40 minutes, police found the vehicle parked and searched the area with a K-9 unit. The suspect was found at a nearby apartment and was taken into custody. The woman was not injured in the attack.

HAYWARD, CA. - On a warm Friday morning it seemed all was well for Jose Alfonzo, but little did Jose and his wife know that something was not right. Jose stepped out his front door to find his vehicle missing. Guidepoint was already preparing for action.

After activating the tracking on the unit installed by the highly trained technicians at Autohaus, Guidepoint contacted the police department with jurisdiction in Hayward, California right away.

The vehicle had moved from location to location and Guidepoint continued to follow its every move and provide the pursuing officers its current location, direction, and speed. Using GPS the vehicle was recovered very quickly and undamaged.

Looks like to me you it would help if your car was stolen.

Fees are not cheap per year but I guess if you worry that much about your car then its good. I will just have good insurance coverage. In most cases of theft I would rather not have the car back if it means having a lot of damage repaired if the car is not a total loss. Just give me the money so I can replace it.

I just pictured your blue smart with a light bar on top of it

LoJack is a sore point with me. Pre-installed by dealer on my Orphan was not a deal-breaker, but a disappointment. LoJack not available to our police in my county. A grand for no protection.

If the dastardly deed happens, I could try to call the Portland Police for LoJack recovery, but I'd bet a dollar I don't have that they will say it's out of their jurisdiction and they have no authority to help me. I hope I'm wrong about that.

I would say the dealer who installed LoJack in a county that does not use that system should be the sore point, LoJack did not make them install it.

Hmmmmmm....don't know that the fortwo is really going to be a target car. Here's a list of most stolen if it hasn't been posted already.

1995 Honda Civic
2. 1991 Honda Accord
3. 1989 Toyota Camry
4. 1997 Ford F-150 Series Pickup
5. 2005 Dodge Ram Pickup
6. 1994 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Pickup
7. 1994 Nissan Sentra
8. 1994 Dodge Caravan
9. 1994 Saturn SL
10. 1990 Acura Integra

I don't see that many of us buying stolen parts and creating a black market demand. The Smart is so conspicuos that cops pull you over just to look at it. There just aren't that many cars to make the high risk worth while. Would vandals take a fortwo for a joyride? LOL They prolly could't figure out the transmission anyway.

And the most stolen car in 2007 in France was...

According to a consortium of car insurers quoted by "AOL*auto" France, the car most often stolen in 2007 was the smart fortwo. Here is the pasted list. FYI, the numbers are for how many units per 10.000 cars insured.
Classement des véhicules les plus volés en France (en nb d'unités) :
1 - la Smart Fortwo (185 unités)
2 - Renault Twingo (146)
3 - Peugeot 306 (110)
4 - Renault Clio (105)
5 - Audi A3 (98)
6 - Renault Mégane (97)
7 - Volkswagen Golf (87)
8 - BMW Série 5 (85)
9 - Audi A6 (80)
10 - Peugeot 307 (80)

The article states that most more expensive cars "sleep" in more secure locations, whereas small urban vehicles are more often street parked.

Meh.......don't want to live in France. I'd guess that the ratio of Smart ownership there is much higher than it'll be here...ever.
