Is the smart good value for the money? Using Google and a GDP converter, the value of todays' $15,000 smart converts to $2,348.29 in 1966. In 1966, a VW Deluxe sedan with sunroof retailed for $1,424.00. So, the smart would be about $1K more than the VW, but considering all the built in safety features, A/C, and overall technical improvements of the smart, it stacks up very well as the "new VW Bug."
interesting calulation, and I think it makes the point! I value this purchase greatly. like I said in another post, it's a purpose-driven purchase; it's not going to be everything to everyone. not even close.
I think the people that are actually buying the Smart car understand this fact very well.
jwight...Great post, it illustrates very well the value of the smart in todays market. In 1966, there were no power windows, air bags, side impact protection, power steering, disk brakes, stereo/CD players, heated seats, leather interiors, traction control, while the beetle was a very basic econo box; the smart is a car.
good job! that is something people ask.point try and get one odered my second one, and have a date of nov-dec 2009. will sell the I have now then hopefully for the same or more.
Curtis, what are we to make of this? It's not factual, just an opinion, unsupported by any accompanying data. Does it help the discussion of the smart's relative value? No. So.....what are you trying to tell us?
I guess if I wanted to criticize a football team (say, the Packers for instance) I could just say "they're crap." But that's of little value; if I could show why they're crap with some solid data, then OK.
Great thread. i have a 1963 ragtop bug and it still gets 30-35 MPG to this day. after owning and working on VWs for years, i can say that they are definitely not crap. how many 35-50 year old cars are still on the road being driven on a daily basis besides a bug? not many.
anyway, back the the topic, if the Smart ever reaches the status of the original VW Bug, that would be monumental. i hope my Smart is as reliable as my Bug is.
oh and lastly, i have a new bug as well. gets 33 MPG and is turbo. runs great. cant wait to see how my Smart does on the road and in the garage next to both of them...
