While resale value is always an interesting point when it comes to cars, I find myself realizing that I have never bothered to ponder this question. Why? When I get my car (due this month), it's going to be a keeper.

If you spend time worrying about what you can't control you are wasting energy.

What my car may or may not be worth if and when I get in an accident?!?! COME ON!!! What should I do with this line of reasoning? Sell my car just in case it might lose value in a year like somebody's gray-market Australian smart and I get in an accident and my insurance company stiffs me on "what it could me worth?" What does that even mean, "what it could be worth?" A car or a house or a can of beans is worth exactly what someone will pay for it when you're selling it. I don't know how to worry about that. I'm going to enjoy my car. You can worry enough for the both of us.

I'M not worried about it....I didn't start the thread! I've just offered my opinion on the smart's resale value. If you don't care what you get for it (or what its worth), that's your prerogative. Indeed, many people do treat their cars and belongings as disposable, that's how stuff winds up in the junk heap. Hey if you got the money to buy a new one if its totaled and your insurance company cuts you a check for only what its worth, I guess that's okay with me!

Well, I have to come clean - just did that to see if you were paying attention (and if there was a name that took up all the spaces.) You are still theguywiththelongestname.

According to what a GM rep said at the SEMA show, the Volt still has a "Thermo" problem with the batteries. Plus the cost is 3 to 4 times of the Smart.

I was "flipping through" this on-line issue and read this short article about an aussie stating that his smart car's resale value had decreased 45% within one year (just based on the market NOT the condition of his smart.) Does anyone have any additional history on this situation? I realize it was last year in 2007, and in Australia BUT I am somewhat concerned that the lack of parts, smart centers' knowledge... may affect us here in the states at some point. What do you all think?

According to the article, his car was a 452 Roadster. Though there are many people who like them, I can see where the considerable drop in value may be related to the car's discontinuation, low volume, and questionable future supply of spare parts, which he complained were never exactly plentiful in the first place.

Short term, the car will keep it's value better than average. Why? It continues to be unique and an overall great car.

This car is only an initial automotive step in the right direction, which means subsequent steps will only be better. Enjoy the fact that we are going in the right direction and that because of our success cars like ours will only improve. To think that this car at this time is the end all in all aspects of ownership is ridiculous.

I hope it does! I love my Smart and would really like to get each of my kids one in the next two years when they begin to drive. 3 used Smarts for 20K would be sweet!

I don't know about that. 3 smarts for 20K in 2 years? The small/green movement is really starting to heat up - but I can't see a supply of cars comparable to ours growing fast enough necessary to drive our current smarts value that low, so quickly.
