I just drove both the Smart and the Yaris coupe today. The Yaris definitely drove quieter and peppier that the Smart. The Smart was nice and big inside but the transmission is real funky. The automatic shifts hard and even if you lift off the gas when shifting. The manual mode feels like the tranny is weak. I wonder how long it will last. Sure was cute though.:] I'm still undecided about which to get. Of course if I want a Smart I can order one and in a year or so I'll have it. A Yaris today. Mmm what's a guy to do?
There is no competition here, I'm leaning toward Smart.
I drove the Yaris, it wasn't that pleasant of an experience. A friend of mine rode in the back seat and said it wasn't too great. Also its kinda boring looking to me; IMO.
Well you got negative all around. I cancelled the Smart because it was taking to long and I still dont have a delivery. I was an 1180. I bought a Yaris. In MHO they both need some work on good looks. Its the same plastic as in the smart. You could make a Ford Festiva look good with the leather. The Yaris is faster and I like the 5sp better. It really doesnt matter if the back seat is small because if you compare it to the Smart, well there is no back seat. Its good for average peope for short distances. The Smart is for city use mostly. The Yaris is better for the highway and some longer distances. Apples and Oranges here. Its what you want the car for and use it accordingly. I read here where someone wants to put a hitch on his Smart to pull a small trailer. arrrrgh. Dumb. The Yaris doesnt recommend it at all either. I recommend you check them both out and make an honest decesion on what you want/need then choose. The Yaris has a better warranty, less cost, more dealers for closer service if needed. I would look at all the real facts, econmy of repair, service, and inital cost. Be objective rather than emotional and you will find something that fits. Hell if I could afford a Lambo and feed it too, I would have it.
The Yaris IMHO wins when it comes to dependability, reliability, HP, transmission, back seat, maybe mileage, and warranty.
Where is loses is looks and the 'fun' factor. You can substitute the Yaris with 1/2 dozens of other micro cars-Aveo, Fit, Rio, etc. and you end up with the same car.
With the Smart, like a Porsche, "There is no substitute"
I like the Smart and its put together really well. I have had mine for a month and the transmission is not so bad. I can best describe it as peppy with character. Its comfortable inside and you really get us to its quirkiness pretty easily.
All I can say is that I haven't driven my Corvette since I got the Smart because its that much fun.
The Smart will make you feel like Rock Star (albeit, not a big rock star).
People wave, give you thumbs up, and you find folks gathered around your car when you come out of a store. It's a kick to spin the Smart story to one and all. ;)
Smart is not the Ideal car, but the fun is worth the money. No other Micro-Car has been sold in the US for many decades. It is truly a one of a kind.
