Well I guess I'll pass on the smiles. My dollar is more important than what other people think. I guess I am not that emotional over a transportation vehicle. If I wanted oooohs and aaaaahs, I'd buy a Bently or Contach.
The Yaris IMHO wins when it comes to dependability, reliability, HP, transmission, back seat, maybe mileage, and warranty.
Where is loses is looks and the 'fun' factor. You can substitute the Yaris with 1/2 dozens of other micro cars-Aveo, Fit, Rio, etc. and you end up with the same car.
With the Smart, like a Porsche, "There is no substitute"
exactly. if u compare the smart to most sub-compacts on a purely practical level, the smart will never win, but the smart is more than that. Its an icon, a culture, its about being different, cool, fun, its a gadget, a statement...
I looked at the Yaris, Fit and the smart.
From a kool, fun, emotional point of view the smart beets them.
I relly like the Yaris, a little more practical but a bit numb and boring. I think it looks very nice but its a bit boring to drive.
The Fit may not look nice to me or most people, but it's by far the sportiest to drive and way more practical than any of these 3 and probably the most reliable and best put together.
I still cant help my self, I want a smart.

Just thought I would make a correction here. The Fit (which is our second car) is not a micro car. You would put the Fit in the same category as Toyota Matrix. BTW, the Fit is a practical and fuel efficient car. We get 36 mpg and have a ton of room for road trips.

Dependability/Reliability? We don't really know yet but have a highly vocal very networked group that is publicizing every issue. Mine hasn't had a single one of the problems listed by anyone here.
There are no other "micro cars" in the US. Aveo, Rio, and Yaris are sub-compacts.
Warranty, yes. But does it truly need it? My Ford Explorer had a 4yr/48K warranty and only had one issue early in its life.
Mileage, on paper the smart is better. Actual results will vary with driving style.
Back seat and Horse Power, don't need it to go to work and run errands.
There was a review on computer MSN today by a guy who took a 400 mile trip in a Yaris and he said it was the most uncomfortable car he had ever ridden in. On the other hand, he wasn't too wild about tranny in the smart...but we all know it improves with mileage and experience.
