There was a review on computer MSN today by a guy who took a 400 mile trip in a Yaris and he said it was the most uncomfortable car he had ever ridden in. On the other hand, he wasn't too wild about tranny in the smart...but we all know it improves with mileage and experience.
I really dont think either one of these vehicles were designed with the intent on long trips. If he was tall and heavy ya it was probably uncomfortable. The steering wheel is moveable but it is mostly useless. Has a bad angle for most people. I am short so I adapt better I guess. The Yaris is not great for large people, thats for sure.
Dependability/Reliability? We don't really know yet but have a highly vocal very networked group that is publicizing every issue. Mine hasn't had a single one of the problems listed by anyone here.
There are no other "micro cars" in the US. Aveo, Rio, and Yaris are sub-compacts.
Warranty, yes. But does it truly need it? My Ford Explorer had a 4yr/48K warranty and only had one issue early in its life.
Mileage, on paper the smart is better. Actual results will vary with driving style.
Back seat and Horse Power, don't need it to go to work and run errands.
not really any other micro cars yet to compare to... and all of those subcompacts listed above are sterile looking and who wants a sterile looking car...and I don't mean clean looking by using the word *sterile*......
the mpg is very close, the insurance is close, the price is close. Pick one and enjoy. It sends the same message to Detroit and D.C., no matter which one you buy.
imho, smart wins out on environmental impact (operation and construction) and of course, "curb appeal". as someone else on this forum said "the fortwo is not a car for introverts".
Then please, by all means, go get your Bentley. I personally am getting a bit tired of your lurking on this site, shooting holes in the balloons of all of us that were patient enough to wait for our smarts and those who understand and accept the reservation/configuration program.
We all feel your pain that you didn't get your smart exactly when you expected to. But now that you have withdrawn your reservation and bought a Yaris, please find the appropriate Toyota fan-boy site and post your smack about the smart there. Thanks.
The people over at the Yaris Forum are more friendly as well to Smarties or former Smarties.

I've driven both cars. The smart seemed a bit more upmarket. Both are fine to drive. I think the Yaris is more practical, but the smart has its practicalities too.
I am going to get the smart, and keep my 02 Neon when I need more room for stuff. YMMV.
Maybe what you say, but the Yaris is also on the list for the 10 least safe cars. Isn't that a shocker? Smart goes off in the other direction.
win
Score: 36
Highs: Front access, turning circle, hatchback versatility
Lows: Acceleration, handling, vague shifter
The Yaris is the smallest and least expensive car Toyota sells in the United States. It actually ranks at the top of the list in both reliability and low cost of ownership, but those factors are not included in Consumer Reports' basic vehicle score.
The Yaris base model with an automatic transmission ranked higher, earning an overall score of 50. From Consumer Reports if you want to believe them.

I am not lurking. I answered some pointed questions. And I dont give s**t if you dont like it. Move to Russia or China. Free speech and all is here. I have not smaked the Smart as you say. It is what it is and what it was invented for. If I didnt like the Smart I wouldnt have ordered one to begin with. I just dont like to be jerked around. If cute is the only reason to spend 15k for a vehicle then I think a lot of you have more money than me.
Then you'll love this, my cabrio was $18,700 "out the door" before taxes and registration fees. That's right, almost 19 large, and I have no regrets. What other convertible, available in the US, could even come close to matching that price? And that's not to mention the "wow" factor of me 'n Charlie cruisin' down the road. Something you would have understood if you had the patience for the smart system to deliver your car.
Not sure where "Russia or China" fit into this discussion since no one is denying your right to free speech. But, as I was always taught, free speech doesn't give you the right to yell "FIRE!" in a crowded theater. I'm simply suggesting that your bashing of the smart and adoration of the Yaris might be a tad more welcome on a site devoted to Toyotas.
I have some pretty strong feelings about Fords. But since I do not currently own one, I neither post derogatory comments about them on a Ford board or trash them here. I focus my comments about topics I understand on boards relevant to the topic at hand. I do my bashing elsewhere.
Everyone just take a deep breath OK? This is not a political site. It's forum where we ALL can share our ideas. Some may like the Smart. Some may not. So far, besides the engine light going on, I like what I have. I will never put you down if you chose a Fit or a Yaris.
Overall, if you drive these cars, you are making a statement about your carbon footprint in this world, whether or not that was your intentions.
The only problem I have is with idiots that buys Hummers then goes on here to make fun of what we drive. To me, they needed to drive a big car to prove their manhood. Like Jay Leno once said, "Where can you find the biggest collection of men with the smallest p___ses? A Hummer dealership".
