Any idea if you have to decide at time of inital purchase or can you buy these warranties at any time during the first 2 year / 24,000 miles? I'd be inclined to wait a year or so and see how my car is holding up before buying additional coverage.
Darn..... that "blurb" the other day sounded too good to be true:

I guess it would be too much to hope that these prices quoted in this thread are extensions on the original warranty, ie 3/36 would bring it up to 5/60K...similar to the number in that earlier blurb. However, in another post from another dealer thread seems to confirm the $395 gets you only one additional year.
Anyone who owns(ed) a Mercedes will tell you that $399 doesn't get a whole lot of "fixin" done at a Mercedes shop so the price is to be expected I suppose.
I'm assuming the years/mileage you listed includes the original factory 2 year/24,000 warranty. So for $395 you get an extra year/12k miles?
Got this back from smart center Louisville:
We can confirm with you that the manufacturer's 2yr/24K mile original warranty is built in the extended warranty. Meaning you will be getting an extra year warranty extension under the 3 year/36,000 miles for $395.
Did anyone find out that if you wanted to purchase an extended warranty you would have to purchase it when you get your smart, or will you be able to purchase it anytime within the 2/24 period?
Yeah,I'd be interesting to hear if you have to buy it along with the Smart too. Also want to be sure it is a normal new car bumper to bumper warranty that can be transferred and used at any location nation-wide (and to know what they consider 'normal wear and tear items', ie some manufacturers cover clutch wear or brake pads, others not...)
I was told that you could purchase it later but the car would have to be inspected at that time and if there were problems, then it could not be purchased. I bought the 5 year 60,000 since this is a new model and who knows what kind of problems might show up in 2 + years.
