Or Lady Guenivere or Jennifer. I am 50 years old and have one child, Jared - 12, at home. The other 4 of 5 are in various states of relationships. I have 3 granddaughters who I get to spoil every chance I get. I am a medieval re-enactor (like the civil war guys, not faire) so cargo space is important
I had absolutly no clue what a smart car was until July 2007. Even with it in movies and such - I had no idea. I just knew that I needed a commuter vehicle for my 64 mile round trip to work. My old Ranger was just not effecient for that purpose, but it hauled around the stuff I needed for my all absorbing hobby. Anyway, I started looking at all the options and did not like what I saw. Until my husband mentioned that Mercedes was putting out a small car. The internet is a wonderful thing. My only concern was the amount of cargo space - can it fit my stuff?
I found smartusa - and loved what I saw. I had not seen one on the road, did not know about the roadshows, I just put down my $99 and started to wait as patiently as I could. Through smartusa's newletters I knew that San Diego was openning up their center at the end of January. About the beginning of February as the family and I were driving to an event in Old Town, I saw the dealership. On our way home we stopped to look. If ever I had doubts... There was enough room in the back, I could get in and out easily, I loved it, I loved it, I loved it. I scheduled a test drive. And almost bought an orphan on my birthday, but it was loaded with just too much stuff I did not need. I haunted the dealership.
From the dealership, I found out about SOCA. I found it helped with the waiting and I enjoyed all the stories of those aready playing with their smarties. And made notes about things to look for when I finally picked mine up.
In the mean time - my husband lost his job at Hewlett-Package after 32 years (outsourced) and the economy tanked. He still has not found another job. So we waited, and hoped and prayed for the car and a job. I was ready to give it up - but my husband said no, we'll make it work somehow.
When I knew the car was on the water I started the financing process through our credit union. With the help of family, I got the financing down and I picked up my Blue Pearl on Sept 5, 13 months of waiting. I could not wipe the smile from my face. He is such a joy to drive. Now just over 2 months later and 4000 miles, I look forward to each time I can get in and ride. The Blue Pearl is of couse blue with a silver tridion cell. Cabrio, comfort package, tack and clock, stuff like that. And blue pearls hanging off the mirror. I adore pearls.
I have never owned a new car - ever. And probably will not get a new one again. This one is mine - even my husband has not driven it.
It is rare that I sit at work with a smile on my face, but after reading your stories, I felt I needed to add my own.
I must have seen the smart car in a movie or two, but I do not recall a specific one. I rarely watch TV. The Wii ads had a car visible in them, and I thought that is a funny looking car, must be Japanese (like the actors who "Wii want to play".
I was poking around the net, and saw a write-up about the car. I went to find one, but they were not in USA.
My last car was an ok Honda accord (v6), and the commute to Brooklyn was getting to me every time I went to fill up the tank. I did a net search for a small car.. and wound up on the smart car usa site. I put my money down... and waited.. and waited.. I went to the dealer to test drive one, fell in love, traded in my old car for a blue/black cabrio.
The thing that I love best, is something that I had not expected. You cannot be shy and buy this car. The strangest people stop, stare, take cell phone photos, ask questions, all when you least expect them.
I have to say for the first time in my 51 years, I have a car that makes me smile; every time I catch someone with their mouth open in amazement. I try to take different routes to work, just to show it off more!
People ask me "how can you feel safe in a little thing like that?" At first I would give them the steel explaination. Then, I tried the if it were not safe I would not have bought it.. Now I just smile and say because it's SMART. They don't get it
Have a great day all, and keep those stories coming!
My name is Caroline and I am 26 years old, living in Queens NY. My smartie is quite meaningful to me - I used 99 dollars from my first career paycheck (I graduated last year) to reserve my smartie and pick her up a week after my birthday (we are both April babies).
I'm Sherry, I'm 67, and I live in a very small, old mining town about 10 miles north of the Mexican border (and 90 miles southeast of Tucson) in the mountains in southeastern Arizona. Here's downtown -
And from my deck -
I lived at the beach in California for about 40 years, and moved here when I retired 10 years ago. I have one son (in San Diego) and a 2-year old grandaughter who loves my car - "toy car! toy car! toy car!".
Lots of hills here, and very steep grades (including getting to my house), but I haven't had any problems with that. We are primarily a tourist town, so I get lots and lots of questions about the car. I wear long leg braces and use a wheelchair, and the smart is so easy for me to get in and out of, and my small travel wheelchair fits fine in the cargo area. When I'm not out running around in the smart, I work at the local museum (Welcome to the Bisbee Mining & Historical Museum), sing in a community chorus, make quilts, and do music arranging and notation. If you're going to be visiting Arizona (or if you live here!), come down to visit sometime! Just send me a pm and I'll show you around!
I'm Karen Stranz , I am 56 Yrs old and live outside of Atlanta, GA
I've been driving an Mini CooperS for about three years, getting in trouble with the police and insurance company because I like to go fast .....
....but it's an exciting little car!
Karen you have such great energy and enthusiasm. It's fantastic that you are a SCOA participant to the max! Love the bees, too.
My name is Lindy. I'm 29 (almost 30, thank gawd) and I live right outside Washington DC.
I started car shopping a year and a half before I got my smart. ...
..... July 21, 2008 and I already have a little over 6,000 miles on her. Honestly, after car shopping for so long there was no way I was going to be able to wait over a year to get my car since then I knew what I wanted.
Yuckmoon -
truly a gal after my own heart
though our ages are far apart,
we are sisters in smart.
