I did read your post about what you need your SUV for, I thought those were the type of things you might do once a year (like me).
I do have to applaud Toyota for the 4Runner and the Hilux, they're some tough SUVs. Top Gear even attempted several times to destroy a Hilux and had to resort to insane methods.
Well, as long as you don't drive the "deathtrap" of GM's SUVs I'm fine with that.
Yeah, I hear ya.... One thing that always makes me wonder is when I see those fullsize pickup drivers hauling a load of air. Not that I'm bashing pickup drivers, because I'm not, but I often wonder if the majority of those guys actually use their trucks as trucks to haul stuff around more than a couple of times per year. If so, they are free to do so, but it does seem a bit silly to me.
See, there you go again trying to tell me why I'm here. And again I'll reply by telling you that I'm not going to argue with you. You may think whatever you want and that's just fine with me. So if you believe I'm evading the topic, then so be it....but you're not going to suck me into a silly debate over why I'm here.
BTW, just for the record, I've never said anyone here shouldn't have purchased a smart. I've never said that anyone here was foolish for purchasing a smart. In fact, I've never said that to anyone I know personally either. So much for your theory.
No data, no research, no community building reason for being here, no response to the question, I guess that means TROLL! Go "save" some Harley or Goldwing riders - they surely need the ever so gracious help of the Critical Thinking messiah.
Quite honestly Bob, if you actually had significant real world data that was undeniably accurate, then I'd have to reconsider my opinion. But thus far, I've only seen semi-fallacies backed by skewed data and questionable theories at best. No offense to you, but as a teacher, I'm absolutely sure that you can not only understand the things I've questioned in your theory/data, but I'm also quite sure you even agree with my points as well.
I find it absolutely hypocritical for you to throw out your half backed distorted logic and then turn about and accuse me of semi-fallacies backed by skewed data and questionable theories at best. Your anti-Smart bias is preventing you from looking beyond your own twisted logic.
I give data and links to back up what I'm saying, you give your opinion, which is worth NOTHING.
So, you don't believe me, I don't care, not that I need your approval.
But back to me for a moment (since you asked). Why am I here? Well, some will say that I must get my jollies by acting like a troll and trying to stir the pot. But those people would be dead wrong. If I really wanted to troll the board, I certainly wouldn't do it by posting the words that I have posted so far. I actually have a fascination with the reasoning behind people's decisions to buy this microcar they call the smart. For so many reasons, I just don't get it. Sure, the safety is a major part of the question for me, but there are other reasons as well. I don't see the car as practical (you have to hitch mount even a set of golf clubs), comfortable, or even economical. I haven't spent too much time browsing the forum, but I'd bet there is a thread or three about fuel economy comparisons with cars like the Yaris, for example.
Anyway, that's really the reason I came here...to better understand what exactly attracts people to this car. But more than anything else, I just can't see how so many people thinking an engineering marvel like the safety cell can change the laws of physics. Oh, some will say that they never made that claim, but it sure seems to me like they believe it.
Above quote from our pal, CT. He's fascinated with the reasons people have bought a smart. Not willing to accept those reasons, just fascinated with them. For so many reasons, he just doesn't get it - and if he doesn't get it, there's no explaining it or accepting it. He wants to better understand what attracts people to this car - and then disagree with the things that attract people to the car. He just can't see - agree 100%.
So, on the surface a "just wondering why..." approach, followed up by "whatever you come up with has got to be wrong" response. So, I think the motives he's stated in his quote above have to be suspect, since he's heard it all concerning why people are attracted to, buy and enjoy smarts, which certainly must have led to better understanding on his part - in which case IMHO he's achieved his goals and can move on to bigger and better things.
Just remember, kids, there's not another worthwhile vehicle on the planet, and no good reason to own anything but a smart. Your kids can walk, your sporting equipment can rot in a closet, and you can studiously avoid driving north of the Mason-Dixon line in February. Now that I've assisted in "community building", I shall retire for the night. Oh, one more thing........ rfernatt, you shame West Virginia. Never seen such bare-faced intolerance from any resident of that fine state.

And even when one is posting thousands of words, a troll is still a........ well, I don't want to be repetitive here.
Thanks Bob, Neon, rfernatt and others who tired to spread reason on this thread. But I think reason is not what a troll seeks.
OK
Now - what's next? Who's got a great mod? Where is the next big smart meet? Where are we all posting pics and vids of our lovely smarts? How fantastic is it that strangers want to talk to us about our cars? Show us where you park your smart! What new cars are on the horizon? What new technologies interest you?
