Just remember, kids, there's not another worthwhile vehicle on the planet, and no good reason to own anything but a smart. Your kids can walk, your sporting equipment can rot in a closet, and you can studiously avoid driving north of the Mason-Dixon line in February. Now that I've assisted in "community building", I shall retire for the night. Oh, one more thing........ rfernatt, you shame West Virginia. Never seen such bare-faced intolerance from any resident of that fine state.
When someone says or claims one thing and then someone calls them on it when they act in opposition to their statements, I don't call that intolerance. Perhaps you do and that's fine, label it what you will.
The smart is not perfect, no car is, and we are all ready to discuss the pros and cons, problems, benefits, issues, etc. We aren't a mouthpiece for smart corporate, but in my definition of community, a constructive discussion including both criticism and praise, only benefits the enthusiast group/community when the author asking the question is genuinely interested in and can respect other points of view from his own. This is especially true when you logon to an enthusiast site where the people paying membership and visiting the site have one thing in common. I can respect other's views and I can agree to disagree, but don't come here and feign open-mindedness when you're obviously not interested in anything (facts, data, reasearch, other opinions) that differ from your own. I consider such behavior to be trollish. My only regret is that I likely responded with a bit too much sarcasm in my latter responses, which in turn probably encouraged CT. I will endeavor to learn from my mistakes in the future.
I'll be happy to discuss my opinion of smart shortcomings, but in another thread. I'll also expect others to disagree with me. At the end of the discussion, though, we will all have added to the understanding, concept, and refinement of this thing we call smart because we participate with a genuine interest in the discussion.
As jwight pointed out, Mr. Thinker has received the response he was supposedly looking for (and the response he was surely expecting), so I'd say this thread is about done, stick a fork in it. On to more worthwhile topics, smart pro or con.
Or could it have something to do with weeping and wailing over "censorship," "this isn't China," ad nauseum. I'm all for closing it but don't want to stifle the erudite discussions....
Sorry, I havent had the energy to help push this thread over the edge this week.
I can even get through 1 page of posts.
How about - WAY off topic as a reason
Hey as long as were off topic any way.
Late Friday night after my wifes flight came in after an extended trip out of town she stoped at her favorite gas station with 100% Gas
While filling up and zoning out staring at the blue led open sign she noticed the Woman behind the counter inside excidetly waving to get her husbands attention, pointing outside at my wife filling her smart.
She about done gassing up and waves them out so they can see the car.
The Husbund comes out with his traditional Sikh turbin, and my wife askes if he would like to see the car.
"No, My Wife told me I needed to come and see the beautiful woman, but the car is cute too"

Doubtful.......I already see a 'warning' on another similar thread, but none here.

Above quote from our pal, CT. He's fascinated with the reasons people have bought a smart. Not willing to accept those reasons, just fascinated with them. For so many reasons, he just doesn't get it - and if he doesn't get it, there's no explaining it or accepting it. He wants to better understand what attracts people to this car - and then disagree with the things that attract people to the car. He just can't see - agree 100%.
So, on the surface a "just wondering why..." approach, followed up by "whatever you come up with has got to be wrong" response. So, I think the motives he's stated in his quote above have to be suspect, since he's heard it all concerning why people are attracted to, buy and enjoy smarts, which certainly must have led to better understanding on his part - in which case IMHO he's achieved his goals and can move on to bigger and better things.
Since you mentioned it, the safety aspect is just one question in my mind. Quite honestly, there are other things that make me wonder why also...
1- Fuel economy - while the smart is definitely considered economical as compared to the average car, there are other vehicles out there that are more economical, while offering other advantages as well.
2- Utility - Speaking of other advantages, the smart has very little room for cargo.
3- Price - Sure, the smart is not expensive, but again there are other cars that are just as inexpensive or even less expensive out there that don't have some of the disadvantages of the smart.
4- Ride comfort - My time in a smart was limited, but it was definitely not what I consider a comfortable ride.
So when you add it all up, I just don't see the attraction to a small car that is economical, but not as economical as other small cars that offer more utility, a better ride, all at a price equal or lower to the smart. And just for the record, I'm not bashing anyone for his/her decision to purchase the smart....but rather wondering why he/she would make the choice in the first place. When I asked my friend (the former smart owner) why she purchased the smart, she could only tell me that she thought it was cute. She really had no other solid reason to buy the car. She mentioned that it didn't cost much and was good on gas, but she admitted that there were other choices out there that had those same qualifications. So for her, it came down to the cute factor.
Wow CT on page fourteen you had eight out of the ten post. Please condense your responses into one post, it's a pretty simple process.
No one cares about your post count here, you will get treated equally whether you have a low count or a high one.
It has nothing to do with post count. Just look at the posts before page 14 and you'll see that I was responding to the many people who had said something to me. It would be silly for me to respond to all of those people in one single post.
