This picture is very misleading. In a controlled crash test, I'm sure a lightweight vehicle like the smart could sustain less damage due to it's light weight when crashed into a fixed object, such as a wall. It makes sense that a MUCH heavier vehicle like the F150 would have to crumple more to absorb the energy from hitting a stationary object.
But in the real world, not all cars crash by hitting stationary objects. In the real world, it's very common for two vehicles to collide on the road, Now imagine what that picture would look like if the F150 and the smart were crashed head-to-head, both vehicle travelling the same exact speed....and that doesn't even take into consideration the difference between bumper heights of various different vehicle when they crash head-on.
Just trying to keep it real...
