Even though our car has been mechanically flawless, I've gone back to the dealership eight times:
1. The day after we bought it, because a "chrome" ring around the foglight fell off and I wanted them to see it.
2. The next Tuesday, to have a new "chrome" ring put it back on.
3. A week later, to have them install the full-height safety net cargo divider accessory that arrived only then.
4. A few days later, to buy a smart (actually, Mitsubishi) oil filter, because I changed the oil at 1,500 miles even though it is not requested in the manual.
5. A few days later, on a Saturday, as a "chrome" mirror cap fell off while drying the car, and I wanted them to see it.
6. A few days later, on a weekday, to get the mirror cap re-glued
7. A couple of weeks later, on a Saturday, as I found one of the "chrome" foglight rings laying on the floor as it popped out during the night (how weird is that?) and I wanted them to see it.
8. A few days later, on a weekday, to get all the "chrome" bits of plastic removed and re-glued.
Strictly speaking, none of the visits was necessary, as all could have been handled via telephone, mail, and self-installation. Depending on the "generosity" of the dealer, perhaps visit #1 would have been required, to demonstrate that the part actually fell off on the road and was lost forever.
Then again, my dealer is 200 feet away from my office.
But if your home is 200 miles away, it might be worth considering.
Was all of this optional "chrome" installed by the dealer? If so, I'd have an issue as well. Plus you did take additional optional trips for the cargo net and an oil change that was not requested in the manual. Glad your ride is mechanically flawless, at this time ours is as well.
Regarding the original post - if you are asking a group of smart owners - go with the Yaris . . . .
If you have to ask, then you should buy the Yaris.
There is a search function up there on top right of the screen. It's your friend.
Out of curiousity, did you pose this same question on a Yaris site?
Your pal,
Meat.
First... there is NO comparison of the Yaris and Smart in the search... so how about checking for yourself before making a jacka** comment like you did. Second... I will ask questions and research on any site I please to make the best decision I can before handing over thousands of dollars. Third... "if you have to ask, then you should buy the Yaris" comment just made you look foolish. Obviously you don't research before you invest.
Personally, I don't like the Honda Fit... had bad experience with Honda years ago and left a bad taste not to mention, I don't care for the appearance, but I appreciate the suggestion. It is interesting that a few on this board have recommended the Yaris as a "good car" and I agree. If it came in a convertible... I would go for it. But since it doesn't and I drive a lot and want a fun experience... I will take a day to do a comparison test drive... first to Smart to drive a car without the power steering (I already drove one with ps) and take it on side streets and highway. Then to the Toyota dealer and do the same with the Yaris. I think that may be the best way to decide as comfort, reliability and a fun drive are important to me. There are pro's and con's to all things, especially cars. This is why I posed the question... to get some opinions and feedback especially from those who were faced with the same considerations or own both models.

"Yaris vs smart" in the search engine yielded 8 PAGES of threads. Obviously you don't research before you post.

There's 249 threads that include references to the Yaris, and many of them include comparisons.
That thing you said about 'checking for yourself?' Try doing it next time. You might find that you've already broached this question in another thread.

Asking about a Toyota Yaris on a Smart site is like asking about sailboats on a Verizon wireless site. If your 'best decision' is based on faulty research ... well, let's just say that I'd really hate to see what you 'worst' decision was.

Not at all. In fact, my post - which prompted this silly response of yours - clearly shows that you're DEFINITELY Yaris material; the Smart is a fun, happy little car that brings people together. Your attitude clearly shows that you belong in a souless little tin box mass produced for angry people.
Problem solved, case closed, turn off the lights, the fat lady has sung.

Then go post on a Honda forum about it. This is still a Smart forum.
For what it s worth, I believe that the Yaris vs Smart question requires that you know what you really want. And you also have to realize that a car can be desirable for more than one reason. I almost got the Yaris, but ultimately decided on the smart because, while you can get much more car for the money if you buy the Yaris (lots of options for much less money), you can get a cheaper car if you go for the smart (I'm counting it as an automatic transmission, even if that is not exactly correct). That said, I have to keep reminding myself that I got the smart mainly for the price - it is such a joy to drive (and I'm not generally impressed by cars) that I kinda' wonder if I should have gotten the fully equipped cabrio. Of course, the extra four feet in the garage doesn't hurt. Safety wise I'm sure they are all at least acceptable. Bottom line, if you want a/c, power accessories, need four seats, and don't need the extra room in the garage, the Yaris may well be the "better car". If you want the cheapest car available (until the tata is out) -or- the extra room in the garage or small parking space -or-if you really go for the style, the smart may be for you.

Yes, the "chrome" plastic bits were all installed by the dealer at no additional charge to the list price for these options. They also re-glued them when they fell off and also provided a replacement at no charge for the one that fell off while underway.
Ever since the last time, when they supposedly took them all off and re-glued them with silicone adhesive, everything's been alright.
Unlike some... I do not have 12 hours to sort through hundreds of threads and what I did read didn't address the question at hand.
Thankfully, there are some nice, decent people on this forum who are indeed helpful. As for the rest... if you have nothing positive to say, do everyone a favor and just skip that thread.

...and yet at least two posters on this thread did a ten second search and came up with plenty of information on the Yaris nonsense.
Kind of an odd thing, though; you say in one post that you will "research on any site" to "make the best decision I can before handing over thousands of dollars" aaaand then you say you don't have the time to sort the information. That doesn't make any sense at all; you'll research, but you won't research.
That's just goofy.

And, through your posts, you just alienated all of them.
