I have the smart and a truck. I switch between them during the week to keep miles low. But if gas prices get above $4 I'll probably drive more of the smart.

dennyrex this baby was designed just for you. It does seem like many of you do have a second car but are trying to use your smart as much as possible.

The smart will be my only car also. I have given my Saturn to my son already. I've put almost 4K miles on the car in the first month and it's working out great. I really could use the cruise control and until that's available I think I'll be renting a car for road trips of more then 500 miles just to give some relief to my hips.

smart is our primary car in that whoever is going out and will be around town takes the smart. If the person going out is going on the highway they take the Bimmer. The object is to use the smart to the max, except for highway travel or trips and keep the mileage on the Bimmer low.

We are retired so a work commute is not part of the scenario.

don't get me wrong, I may someday drive the pan american highway to south america in it ;-)

I'm from the west coast, so somewhere along the way I see a trip from NY to Seattle (and back).

Anyone planning on driving the 2008 New York to Paris race in May?

This is a really charming and warm-hearted story from the 1950s. An adventurous couple from Hamburg/Germany starts on a trip around the world - with their "Goggomobil", a German mini car from the 50s. They travel through Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe - always well dressed and open for all kinds of contacts with the locals. The movie, a box office winner in 1964, had long been forgotten and was found again and restored lately. Peter and Marlotta are still alive and still together. If you can maintain your love on a "Goggo" trip around the world you can be sure that it is deep enough for a whole life. Watch this movie and enjoy a time when even a trip to the neighboring country was an adventure - let alone a 5-year journey around the globe...

1st slot will go to my new smart** It will replace my current commuter that has survived 5 years in Atlanta, 8 years in Memphis, and 2 years here in WA. My daily commute is now 50 miles RT and I will be looking to add CC.

I have an EB Expedition to tow the boat and drive over the snowy pass and it is very comfortable, but 13 MPG is painful at the pump!

I live in Macho-Truck-Midland but use the smart as the primary driver. I leave hauling mulch and lumber for the truck, and we take Grandma to dinner and church in the M-B, but to-from work (about 20 miles round-trip), groceries, small items runs, and my twice-a-month hiking commutes to the Big Bend Nat'l Park and Terlingua are by smart. Rednecks give me a little grief about the car, but I always end those conversations by saying "I'll see you at the gas pumps." Oh yeah, I'm 6'6" and Texas-sized.
