You are exactly correct, without going into technical details, a generator works by creating electric current through opposing magnetic fields, the more current required, the stronger the magnetic field. The opposing field creates the "load" on the gas motor. That is why a portable generator speeds up when you turn on something attached to it, the rpms on the motor go up in response to increased load.
