SO if for some reason you're still not convinced the smart is a good deal.....

....then check this other 'Gem':

GEM e2 Specifications Curb Weight 1,140 lbs GVW 1,850 lbs Payload Capacity 710 lbs* Length 99" Height 70" Width 55" Wheelbase 72" Cubic Feet of Cab 47 ft Turning Circle 24 ft Tires 12-inch street-rated Range Up to 35 miles Top Speed (High Mode) 25 mph Top Speed (Low Mode) 15 mph *

wheelbase size is about the same as a smart, however with a comparably equipt model listing at over $15K, it had better go faster than 25 MPH!!!

the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) designated a new class of motor vehicle, the low-speed vehicle, also known as the Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV). The low-speed vehicle class allowed GEM cars to be driven on public roads if they met certain safety criteria such as having safety belts, headlamps, windshield wipers, and safety glass. GEM cars always come equipped with these safety features making them a benchmark in the industry.
From the GEM site; as an NEV they are limited to 25 mph.

The GEM is a short range electrical car. Not even close to the Smart class of cars. This is a bit of apple / banana comparison for cars. The Gem would do well in a large business complex, like a movie studio, where short range trips are needed. In some areas, like Newport Beach, CA, people use the Gem for local trips to the market.

However, for most people, the Gen isn't going to come close to what they need.
