The technology is nothing new, BMW has had it in its E36 series since 1992, and even earlier in its 5 and 7 series. So it is at least a 16 year old technology, in their case, the intermittent cycle is also speed sensitive, not sure if it is the case for the smart.

Sorry, yes, automatic wipers are part of the comfort package. They adjust themselves depending on how wet it is. From slow interval wiping to fast.
