SRS Indicator Light

I've had my cab for exactly one month now (first one delivered in Orange County) and have loved every minute of it! Unfortunately, right now it is in the MBZ/smart repair shop in Laguna Niguel.

Last Thursday, the SRS (airbag) light came on (about 750 miles) Mark Derengowski, smart center GM (a great guy) said this was the first one to have this issue.

I just spoke to the assistant service manager and he indicated that it is a seat belt sensor and that they can't release the car until it is replaced (for safety reasons). The replacement belt needs to be sent over from France....best case, a couple of days, worst case a couple of weeks.

The service guy said he had calls on two more yesterday.

My advice if your SRS light comes on is to call smart service, let them know so they can order the seat belt BEFORE you take your car in.

Thanks for the advice. If/when this ever happens I'll follow your advice so I can continue to drive.

Arrrgh, so let's say I put 24k miles on the car and then the extended warranty kicks in...I either have the choice to deal with a light or pay $100 bucks to tell Smart to fix it.

I've never met anybody with the last name ending in ski that wasn't an outstanding person. I'm thinking about adding that to my names.

My passion had the SRS light come at about 750 miles also. I took my car into the smart center Lincolnwood (Chicago) today. I was told that the driver side tension unit showed a high resistance and that’s why the light came on. They removed the ground strap from the frame rebooted the car’s computer and re-attached the ground and the light went away.

If it happens again they will replace the unit. They were great to work with and I feel they honestly answered my questions.

O.K., let me see if I have this right. If the seat belt sign comes on over the rear view mirror, I need to go and have it fixed? I notice that when someone is in the passenger seat this light goes out. Am I correct in thinking this is working correctly and not to worry about it or is this what you guys are taliking and I need to call and have arrangements made to have it fixed? Any advice would be appreciated.

That light over the mirror merely indicates whether the passenger side arbag is 'active' by going OUT. In other words that side airbag doesn't fire unless a certain amount of weight (more than a small child) is in that seat. The light on says: no airbag.
