My advice if your SRS light comes on is to call smart service, let them know so they can order the seat belt BEFORE you take your car in.
on the other hand, the SRS light not only diagnosis the seat belt tensioner, but ALSO the airbag. Accordingly, one should not assume its just the seat belt and the car should be brought to the dealer ASAP anyway!
Just back from dealer (Smart Center Hartford).
2 error codes:
"Driver's seat belt pretensioner" and "Passenger side buckle pretensioner".
They said it could be due to poor ground or high resistance connections. They checked all connections and resistance readings and found no problems. They cleared the codes and sent me on my way. (BTW, these errors are not read by the Scangauge)
They mentioned - on Audi's, they've seen the buckle error from a change in resistance due to bending the buckle. Last night when the light came on, I had a passenger for the first time in a few trips.
Time will tell if it was a fluke or a real problem. Hopefully I will never revisit this thread.
Dealer looked at it again. Same error codes and a new one for the passenger seat weight sensor. Dealer has no ideas.
They are going to call smart for guidance.
They reset the light and sent me on my way.
Light is back on again. I drove it home from dealer on Monday. I didn't drive it yesterday. This afternoon (Wednesday) the light came on before I left my driveway. Just me in the car this time. All other times I had a passenger.
Looking for opinions here: Should I be driving this car with questionable airbag protection 35 highway miles to my dealer, or should it be towed?
I've had my cab for exactly one month now (first one delivered in Orange County) and have loved every minute of it! Unfortunately, right now it is in the MBZ/smart repair shop in Laguna Niguel.
Last Thursday, the SRS (airbag) light came on (about 750 miles) Mark Derengowski, smart center GM (a great guy) said this was the first one to have this issue.
I just spoke to the assistant service manager and he indicated that it is a seat belt sensor and that they can't release the car until it is replaced (for safety reasons). The replacement belt needs to be sent over from France....best case, a couple of days, worst case a couple of weeks.
The service guy said he had calls on two more yesterday.

I'm not sure you can do the pre-order routine. My dealer was going to have the parts available when I brought mine in for an alarm problem. They didn't and said it was because Smart wouldn't let them order in advance of seeing the car and it had to be a VIN specific order. He apologized saying he thought ordering would be like it was at the parent Mercedes dealership. So, either he forgot and invented a reason or Smart has a different system. (He seems like a decent guy so I tend to believe him.)
Is it related to liability? For traceability, VIN has to be checked and etched on the appropriate replacement safety devices so as to prevent wrong devices to be installed? Just an idea...
the fellow at the dealership said he assumed it was because Smart didn't want dealers stockpiling parts that were in short supply but your surmise makes sense too
Just had this light come on for me yesterday. Also just got my Scangauge and I can second the post above that this trouble code does not show up.
I guess I'll give Smartcenter Seattle a ring this afternoon. It kind of sucks to have it towed all the way across the state for a little airbag light, but if that's what they have to do...*shrug*. Maybe they have some things I can try like what was listed above, though I don't know where the ground is that was mentioned.
