Stalling Smart Passion

Thanks for your post.
I have never used the extra key. It's still in it's sealed envelope. Regarding bumping into the key as the cause for shutting down the car, I'm incredulous if this is true, that Smart's design flaw, should now be my problem, not theirs. But again, I can't believe that this is the cause, because the stalling would occur much more frequently.

It's amazing how people will say the rudest things on the internet that they wouldn't dream of saying to a person's face.

Thanks for your post.

"One thing I was thinking for the original poster is that evilution (I think) has a mod that separates the metal key part from the fob with the electronics but keeps them together on the same key ring."

Do yu have any specific info on how or who can modify the key?

It looks like a relatively easy DIY mod:

Evilution - Smart Car Encyclopaedia

Evilution is awesome.

I have had my smart for almost five months now and when I pull into the garage , I still reach up to the wheel to shut it off, before I remember the key is on the console. Also when my two brothers have ridden in the passenger seat , both have long legs, their left knee would always gravitate to be perilously close to the key. I would have to remind them to watch out, so they didn't bump the key. It's is a poor placement on smart's part if you ask me.

I have a habit of sometimes resting my right hand on my seat in my current vehicle because the compartment between the seats isn't tall enough to work as an armrest. Found myself doing the same thing while driving my Dad's Smart car, and yup, I stalled it once. I know when I get my car I will have to watch what I'm doing! Old habits die hard...

Being 5'7 and 350 pounds myself, I think if obesity was the culprit, I would have had the same thing happen to me. I have not...

To the people making crude crass remarks to the poster with the problem, not everyone can trace obesity to simply overeating. I for example, am disabled and my genetic disability caused me to have extreme mobility problems that get worse with age, I eat normally but do not have the ability to work off the calories any more and so I fight weight issues on a daily basis. My only hope is bypass surgery and unfortunately insurance issues have made that difficult. I now face a 1 year wait to get my surgery performed through Medicare, assuming they don't change their policy in the mean time and refuse to pay for it then.

Everyone needs to be more compassionate to others, someday you may walk or not walk in "their" shoes.... Remember then how you laughed at or were critical of others...

A quick search of this site to find any information on the " design flaw" that causes the smart to stall did not come up with much. Fact is the only references I could find are instances were folks turned off the key unintentionally. Good luck and let us know if you find a solution.

Having owned a 01 Saab with a console ignition switch, I can tell you that inadvertantly shutting the car off is not uncommon with this design. My favorite was when the dog would poke her head/paws forward from her usual rear seat position and kill the engine, then retreat to her back seat perch. The first couple times this happened we had no idea what was going on.........

nytwodees - Start the smart and play with the key. I seem to remember when I shut the car off with the key, the instrumentation stays on for a while after. You have mentioned you loose everything. Could be the battery terminals are not connected properly at the battery or to the vehicle. I would think your dealer would have caught this the first trip if true though.
