Indeed, to disconnected the battery without following the proper procedure will result in a locked radio. Your separate radio Owner's Manual should guide you to unlock it and the Dealer should have given your (or the original owner) the code...
Good luck!

The Radio9 and Radio10 units in the 451 aren't secured like that.

I sold several Radio10s to various folks on SCOA and never had an issue.

Is your radio an aftermarket radio? Is your smart a 450?

Correction: after checking both manuals I couldn't find any mention of an auto-locking procedure. Sorry.

The above was for the 451. As stated below, the 450 will auto-lock.

This link is to a page on Evilution. It's titled Grundig, so I'm not certain that it pertains to your situation, but the symptoms sound similar:

Good luck and keep us posted.

Yes, the 450s radio will lock and the specific code is required to get it to work again. Check the paperwork that you received when you bought the car new.

You can get a code from a MB dealer but it will cost you...

If you know the original dealer they should have it on record.

Have a look through they owner's manual and associated bit of

paper in the plastic folder you should have received with the car.

It may be in there

If, when the battery is getting old and tired and you want to replace it, would it be OK to feed 12V to the terminals from another battery or a battery charger before disconnecting the almost dead battery and installing a new one? (450 only)
