I've had my smart since the middle of March and still haven't seen another outside of dealer demos here in Buffalo, NY.
I know they've been delivering cars but I haven't seen them.
To make this a thread, I'll ask, "how many days/hours/weeks between sightings for you?" and where are you?
it may be your area. I would wonder how their sales are up there (as well as any other potentially severe-winter area). Downstate (here on LI) I have seen many, and we have probably 10-15 people posting in the regional section for our area....
I have seen exactly ZERO on the road other than myself. I've also spoken with 5 of the campus police at the VA in Dallas and so far mine is the only one to show up at the VA hospital parking lot. And spoke with 2 local city police officers of which only one of them had seen another smart in the area. I know there are others in the DFW metroplex area. Just not enough for me to have seen another one yet. ;)
The man person on the other hand saw a yellow/silver passion in/near Grand Prairie about 3 or 4 weeks ago.
Drove from central Washington to the Seattle area to pick up our smart and saw zero smarts until we arrived at the dealership. Our first look at a 451 was about 20 of them on the lot! Picked up our car, entered bumper-to-bumper traffic out of the area and have driven about 400 miles since and the only place we've seen another 451 was on the dealers' lot. As far as I know, we have the only 451 in central Washington state, although there are two 450s (which the owners paid BMW money for)
Hadn't bought a new car in quite a while and the experience has not improved with the passage of time. While the staff was pleasant, most of them had started within the last couple of weeks and were still learning about the cars. While there was no added markup on the car, they did try to convince us that an extra $5,000 in "protection" was a very good idea and would provide peace of mind. (And would have us paying over $21,000 for a passion coupe...) We were able to resist the temptation, but did spring for the rubber mats, which we got and cargo cover, which they will ship when they get it.
Frankly, the exclusivity so far is kinda fun and keeps us from having to learn a wave or secret handshake, but my smile muscles are getting a severe workout!
...there have only been approx. 55 smarts delivered to-date out of the Bloomington, MN smart center. Of that number, approx. 10-15% of those cars reside out of the state. Outside of the dealer demos and 'awaiting pickup' smarts on their lot, I have yet to have a sighting myself. I have 'heard' from other people that they have spotted another here and there, but we're still just too scattered about to come across one another just yet.
I'm guessing that the larger metro areas on both coasts will start "seeing smart" sooner and with more regularity than those of us inland drivers. When the Saturns were brand new back in 1991, I owned one of the first cars to arrive here in MN. It took me nearly 2 months before I saw another on the road and that was with a US brand and lots more production/delivery/marketing, etc.
Until the smarts get through a year or more, it's unlikely they will be populate the roads enough to be 'common.' Even less so if you're away from a smart dealership in a metro area. The statistical numbers make it a reality not hard to figure out.

Is it a car? Is it a mind set? It's BOTH!
They delivered 90 at one of the two dealers this month alone but have only seen a total of 2 'in the wild' (not counting my own which was delivered last Sat). That dealer also stated that a fair number were for customers outside of Chicago (some downstate as well as NW Indiana) but majority are local. Hopefully we'll start seeing more!
There are at least four of us in the Dayton area, but I haven't seen the others on the road yet. Just not enough concentration for us to cross paths. Need to look at doing local car shows, cruise-ins, etc. to get some exposure for the cars. Ours will be at a Corvette and a Mini gathering next week, plus the local cruise-in this Friday night.
I've seen a few around Buffalo randyzimmer. Usually I see either a Yellow/Black or Blue/Grey Passion and a I just saw a Black/Black Passion the other day. Pretty soon there will be a Red/Black Passion zooming the streets : ) And I talked to the dealer and he said that most of the cars delivered to the Buffalo site go out of the area to places like Rochester/Syracuse etc.
