Stolen car

This morning, getting the cargo divider from scAlexandria, I saw this blue cabrio. It was stolen and recovered (LoJack) in that sad shape:

I feel sorry for the owner. If that happened to me, I'd rather have the car never be found again, lost for ever and me in total ignorance of what happened to it. BTW, the insurance declared it a "total".

I hope this wasn't the bad result of a bum shifter where the lollypop key can't be removed!

Was the interior damaged? Must've had frame damage else insurance would not have declared it a total lost.

Did that car appear to rolled or did it drive through a fence perhaps?

As for it being stolen, did you happen to see if they busted out the ignition or anything like that?

Afraid not, but almost: the keys of another car parked just beside it were in plain sight... (and maybe the smart's key was on the same ring?).
That smart was locked. The person who broke in used something through the edge of the soft roof to unlock the door, and... they took both cars. The smart was recovered thanks to LoJack (usual disclaimer: I have no connection, financial interest, etc...) but the other car, a luxury Japanese vehicle, hasn't been found yet!

Sorry, I have no other details. At least none I feel at liberty to share...

With an electronic kill switch that needs the key to start, I am somewhat suspect it was stolen without a key. Especially for such a new car. Cars with electronic kill switches get stolen via tow trucks and similar, very rarelly do thieves have the technology/knowledge to jump start it.

yeah, i know on all hondas you can start the car with a series of e-brake pulls and brake taps. some idiot posted how to do this on the s2000 forum i used to be part of. i wonder if the smart has something like this as i know most cars do have some method of starting without a key in case it is lost. benz's from a few years past had some way of starting by accessing the ecm.
