Sudden and Unusual increased MPG!

Holla everyone...

Well I usually get anywhere around 40-42 mpg on my smartie...
But in the last 3 ( 1/2 fill ups ) I have gotten 50.2 - 52.8 and today 55.3 mpg!
At first, I thought it was just that i over filled my tank (I usually stop after the first click) so I didn't really pay too much attention, but after 2 other repetitions, I am like wondering what is going on or what am I on?!

Anyone noticed something similar to me? My car is a cabrio with abouy 4,000 miles on it...
I AM LIKING IT!!! lol

They flipped the switch at the factory and you now have great MPG.

Very Interesting. We have 3200 miles on our Cabrio and it has started to get 46 to 50 mpg. I also thought maybe it was due to bad fillups, but it seems to just get better and better....

Maybe it took longer for your engine to break-in? Did you drive any differently/different routes ?

I recently ( a month ago ) took a long ride home to Montreal from NH - about 6-7 hour drive and it seemed that it got better after that... you think its related>?

Thats interesting - i have almost 2000 miles, and my smart seems to alternate. One tank will be 40, and the next will be 32 . . . and the pattern continues. It could be that I've been alternating between Chevron and Costco--but my, that would be a big difference! Did you change gas stations?

I read on another post it has something to do with the flux capacitor.

Seriously though, with a scan gauge you can watch your real world mpg numbers and I find that even a small change in my driving style seems to have a large impact in fuel consumption (but I have my fingers crossed that as my engine gets more miles that my mpg will improve like yours did!).

Practical Joke?

I can't remember where I heard this, a commedian perhaps, but you target someone who always watches their mileage and add a quart of gas to their tank every few days, then slowly increase the amount you add until they are getting about 100 mpg. Then you slowly decrease the amount down to zero and they are getting the same mileage they had before. Now you start siphoning off gas until they are getting 10 miles per gallon. You have to do it in a subtle way such that it doesn't register on the gas gauge. I always wanted to try it but never had a likely target. But wouldn't it be funny? But a joke's a joke; don't let them take the car to the dealer to get fixed. That's when it stops being funny.

We did the same thing to my grandmother who had Alzheimer's - every month we had a new birthday party for her. She was thrilled! After a couple of years of this she was amazed how well she felt for someone who was 119 years old.

No-one ever had the heart to tell her the truth. She died thinking she was 134.
