Yakima sells a rack system specifically for the smart. Get the rack extenders to create about a 24" distance center to center between the bars. I have a box on mine to carry the skis for this winter. It has worked very well, has been quiet and had a minimal effect on gas mileage.

Ready For Ski Season! - The old Thule box fits well on the Yakima rack. Smart Car of America Gallery

just use a "soft rack". they are only 30 bucks and are easy to install/ remove. It should work out well, but if it doesn't then it did not cost much anyways. I am thinking about getting a soft rack when mine comes in. This is the reason I decided on the cabrio.. just put the roof back, prop the board behind the seat (and on the "roll bar") and go! I've seen many convertibles do this...I saw a bug with a 10 ft board sticking up out of the top... the smart would look even better. :P I am glad to see i will not have the only "surf smart".

what is cool about the one Cube has, is if you have a Cabrio, it still works. Looks like it is solid side rail mount. So go down the road, top down and with board attached LOL.
