Issue 1: is that the open/close switch is a "momentary" type switch.
when you press it, the roof moves, when you let go, the roof stops.
There would have to be a function that allowed the switch to operate for a specific time period (say 15 seconds?) in order for this to work.
The switch in the vehicle is a momentary switch, but you can operate the roof from the remote. That means the computer can operate the roof independently of the switch and that the reverse of the needed function exists in the computer, so presumably this part is technically possible.

Hey There,

I recently bought a pre owned Smart Car Cabrio 2004.
When we first got the car one week ago and tried to let the roof down the roof would not go down. we then returned the car to the dealership three days ago and got it back last night. They said that they had in fact replaced all the clips as well as the cable it runs on. They said they had tested it 5 times before they gave it back to us. When we got back last night and took the roof down with such ease we were just so excited but then the roof would not go back up. Its driving my husband mad and he now wants to take the car back while we still are able to and cancel the contract, And to be honest I really dont want to...How do you get the soft roof back up? The dealership here in South Africa said that weare to keep our foot on the brake when we let the roof back up,is this true? Have any of you experienced this issue and what did you have to do so solve this issue. Another thing is my Ignition-when I turn the key sometimes it just wont turn and we have to play around a bit-do you as smart car drivers think we have had a bad buy and should look for another smart car or are these easily fixed and seen to?Please give me hope and tell me its not all as complicated as my husband I think it maybe

Maybe this can help:
Evilution - Smart Car Encyclopaedia
'evilution' may have other hints for closing the roof, browse around his useful site... Good luck.

None of these are normal by any stretch of the imagination.

In second generation smarts in the U.S. market, there is no need to depress the brake pedal to move the roof. If your car requires depressing such pedal, the requirement should be consistent.

You may wish to return the car while you still can.
