I get asked that quite often. I just gave up and say something like, "Yep. I often put gasoline in my electric vehicle."

Ditto, twice at the gas pump I have been asked "Is it Electric" and quite a few other times in parking lots. I can understand in the parking lots, but at the gas pump it is a little unnerving.

I suspect "Is it electric?" may also be shorthand for "Is it a hybrid?" Trying to think the better of my fellow citizens.....:-)

In Europe at least there is going to be an Electric smart fortwo and the next step for the 451 is mhd (micro hybrid drive) stop and start system for fuel and emissions regulations.

See we've all had this in the UK but still get the odd question of "wheres the rest of that car?" I usually get "WTF is that?" as I drive a forfour.

I was at the gas station at Ft Stewart Ga. when some guy came up to me while I was gassing up Smartie, and asked if it was electric. I looked at him and said "Sure Is". He walked off like he knew that he had it all figured out. I should have also said "Hears your sign".

Maybe the answer to give to, "Is that electric?" should be, "Well the lights and radio are electric." Then wait to see if they can figure it out...

A lady asked me "Is it electric?" this past weekend. I smiled and said "Only when I turn the key to engage the starter."

Perfect! That's what I'm using next time it happens. Thanks, Bob!

I got the "electric" thing yesterday, the first day of ownership. It didn't take but a nano-second to realize that she was asking if it was a hybrid, not if it was a battery car (she knew that the engine was running). She just phrased it too generally. Also got the smarmy "Where's the other half?" bit from someone else. I just said "Don't need it; didn't order it."

The first time I saw a smart was in Paris in the 90s and my first question was whether it was electric or not (it was parked). My question was meant to ask if it was pure electric not a hybrid (I don't think hybrids existed then) so I don't think it's a silly question...unless you have a gas nozzle inserted. I suppose you could say it was smart sex then. :-D
