It looked like the early reservists (March) were beginning to get invitations to configure in September and are just getting their cars now (i.e., four months). I think these first ones took a long time for a variety of factors (reservation process, determining and scheduling manufacturing, and the confirmation process); in short, I don't think they should have taken that long. (Volvo is delivering orders for the C30 in six to eight weeks and that would be typical for overseas deliver of a BMW or Mercedes.)
For us non-early reservists, we're queued because of the huge interest and demand. My reservation letter was before they thought to update their boilerplate. It said the "second half of 2007" and I didn't reserve until October. I'm not expecting to configure until third quarter of 2008 or take delivery before Q4 or even Q1 of 2009.
So, depending upon what correspondence a reservist received from Smart and to what degree a reservist has been plugged into a forum like this, it is understandable how folks could be really ... unhappy.
Depending upon fuel prices, I'm betting sometime in 2009 people will be able to get a Smart in less than four months.
