Top 5 Fuel efficent

I saw the MSN list of the top 5 most fuel efficient cars according to EPA
1. 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid (CVT AT-PZEV) : 45 MPG
2. 2009 Toyota Prius (Base) : 45 MPG
3. 2009 Volkswagen Jetta (TDI) : 41 MPG
4. 2009 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen (TDI) : 41 MPG
5. 2009 Smart fortwo (passion cabriolet) : 41 MPG

Our smarts are the only GASOLINE ONLY car on the list. 2 hybrid's, 2 diesels.

We are getting some of the recognition we deserve.

Are the hybrids measured in highway or mixed? They must have improved those engines considerably, because I can't imagine the battery helping much at all on a 300 mile trip at 70mph. The last few years' models weren't near 45MPG highway.. city, yes.

That's actually some pretty impressive company to be in. Two well regarded hybrids and two TDI's, all of which cost almost 10k more than a comparable Smart. Now if diesel would just come back down in price...

Actually the battery kicks in at all speeds on the Prius.

True, but my point was that I doubt it's doing much good over a long haul at highway speeds. It can't possibly have enough juice to maintain positive output for 300 miles. A Prius owner would know better than I would, though.

It's not working independently at highway speeds. Gas engine & electric motor are working in conjunction to give you an effective yield of 110 hp when you need it. So, it is helping with gas consumption. I think that the Prius system is unique in this regard, but don't hold me to that.

I'm interested in the micro-hybrid, but from what I can tell you pay a premium for it. True?
