Hello all, What can we expect for the life of the engine considering mixed city and highway driving with a history of good maintenance? BTW 2008 451
Cabrio...
Barring any catastrophic failures, usually caused by human error along the way, any auto engine should expect to last over 200,000 miles, it may well be one of the things still going when the rest of it goes to hell. Cars don't rust out here in Tucson, but I doubt I would keep anything that long again. I have over 200,000 miles on my 1984 Toyota pickup, that I bought new at age 17, my first car, and I have no doubt this Mitsubishi engine, especially with it being so modern, will last just as long or longer.
Better engine design, improved lubrication and synthetic lubricants....it may be a while before we can estimate the life expectancy of this new model...
I like what you said about modern tech, I also feel that this little engine works pretty hard more than most. I think it will wear sooner. I also think it will be pretty easy to rebuild, think about it. 3 cyl. vs. 8 cyl.
I have been working on mine, just messing around, and there really is not much to it. it should be easy and fairly cheap to fix. if nothing else from sheer volume alone. all the rebuild parts will fit in a shoebox!!
I did a cylinder head job on a Metro with 160,000 miles on it last year....I think the modern engine, properly cared for of course, will surprise you. I will be curious to see how mine does in the long run though....only time, and miles, will tell.
2smartArizona, You did say Toyota!!!!!! right. They build cars to last forever. so does Honda. There is no history on the Smart's new engine. To fix it. A oil change will cost you a arm and a leg.
