Oooohhhh........the side mirrors fold?! Now, that is a very interesting and useful bit of information. Will they stay folded back, or are they spring-loaded?

I checked for you. They don't fold much. I measured about a 2 inch reduction per mirror when folded. They will stay in that position though.

Thanks again, BandSofC! This brings up an interesting point. The official smart car cover, as well as an after-market cover tailored specifically to the smart, shown and discussed on these forums, both have sewn-in pockets for the side mirrors in the outward position. Surely, the cover designs, as well as the process of placing a tightly fitted cover on the smart, could have been made considerably simpler by taking advantage of the folding feature of the mirrors........

I'm think the Smart may fit inside a Dodge Sprinter van.

http://www.dodge.com/en/2008/sprinte...ad_compartment

Door-to-Door width at center is 61.6...it'd be tight but I think it'd fit.

No matter what the manual says I measured my Passion today.

Normal position = 69"

Folded back = 65"

Folded forward = 68" (curves keep it wide)

The Bald Eagle can have a wing span of up to eight feet and can weigh up to 15 pounds. The Eagle's wing-span is just 8 inches shorter then the Smart Car.

:-) I keep getting stuck in traffic in my pig.. err VUE in these exact same situations. I can't wait for my smart - it is going to shave valuable minutes off of my commute.

There is one more thing that's important to consider regarding the total width. That would be how much width you require to actually be able to enter, or exit the smart. For months, I've been stupidly thinking that the Smart will fit easily into my golf cart garage, which is 7' 6" (90") wide. Suddenly I realized that, I'll need to be able to actually get in & out the car. With the Smart being 5' 6" (66") with mirrors in, that leaves a total of 2 feet. Seems a little tight to me now that I really think about it. Anyone in the Temecula, CA general area want to pay me a visit so I can verify?

The 53.1" at the wheel wells might be a problem

stevenv, I've had the same kind of fun with narrow right turn lanes. It took me a while to get used to the new depth perception I've had to develop with the smart. My number 1 reason for owning the smart is it fits in my 1/2 car garage which measures 6' wide (wing tip to wingtip)...
