trade in amount for 2008 for 2009?

I have a red smart passion that I am trading for a 2009 that should be here in Nov. KBB doesn't even list the smart nor does edmonds. I know that my sales person said she would give me what I paid for it but never got to talk to her on my 10,000 mile oil change. Has anyone traded yet? Once again I looked at the minis. The mini dealer said they have no clue what my trade in would be...It is so new that they didn't know and still don't know. I drive 80 miles a day and everyone but me thinks I am totally nuts to be on an interstate with my car, why I look at minis from time to time. It has given me several scares but have learned to DRIVE it as someone told me to do in those cross ocean breezes. Also, she mentioned that this year there would be a tax break on the Smart. Does anyone know about that? When I bought the Smart it was only on hybrids.
My smart has heated seats, tinted windows, power steering, not leather but cloth. She also mentioned that they take them to auction, don't sell them on the lot. Any info would be appreciated.

You'll do better on Craigslist than a trade-in at a dealer. The dealer needs to make at least a grand profit on any car, so they may offer you 10k for a car worth 12k at private sale. You could try ebay, but that site mostly attracts buyers looking for a bargain and you might only get 10k or 10.5k on that same 12k car. 12k being an example of course... I couldn't guess what your car's value is, except to say that if you get more than one offer, its value is whatever people offer you. Start at the new price (15k?) reduced by a couple grand for a year's life and see what they talk you down to.

Where did the tax break thing come in? Is that for real or just a rumor?

tax break and trade in

I just talked to my husband and he said go for Craigs list and we will try selling that way since no one is sure about the trade in value. I paid almost 18.000 with tax, tags, tinting, and dealer prep.

TAX CREDIT For Smarts
I've been doing some research about potential tax credits for Smart cars, and it looks like they may qualify as "lean burn technology motor vehicles." The only hitch is that if you bought your Smart this year and want to claim this credit, your U.S. distributor of the Smart cars MUST apply for certification (submit paperwork) before December 31st or you apparently can't get the credit!!

I encourage everyone to check out these two links to see the IRS bulletin and the current list of credits available:

Internal Revenue Bulletin - February 6, 2006 - Notice 2006-9
http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/...157632,00.html

Does anyone have input on this? Am I interpreting this bulletin correctly? If I'm right, we all need to light fires under our Smart car distributors to take care of their certification ASAP! Personally, I want to get this message out to the others who bought their cars from Dick Adams Smart Cars in Salina, CA, where I bought my car. Call your dealers today and talk to them!

I'm just sayin' - a tax credit of a few thousand dollars sure wouldn't hurt!

I recommend starting a separate Tax Break thread... this info/rumor/possibility is lost in this thread

Thanks for the tip! I just sent it to the CEO of our dealership chain here in Hampton Roads Virginia. We will see...

The thing is, by distributor they dont mean the car dealer. They mean the actual importer. ie; PAG

So is it true you can probably sell your 2008 Smart for what you paid for it on Craig's list? No reduction for a year of use? Or is that just the best case scenario and you probably need to expect a grand or two less? And I sure hope there is a tax deduction coming!
