Traded my smart for a Porsche Carrera S Cabriolet

For exactly one day - as a rental . After nearly 11 months of ownership, I brought the little smartie in for its one year service. Right next door is a car rental dealership with some high end models. Since these rentals were just sitting on the lot due to a depressed economy, I got this new black Porsche Carrera S Cabriolet for $300 a day (down from $600).

It was like taking my SRT8's engine, putting it inside of my wife's Mini-Cooper and then improving the quality of everything else. However, when I was returning it, I was starting to regret the decision - did I just taint my 11 month appreciation for everything my smart car offered and stood for?

I was genuinely shocked that immediately as I started to drive my smartie home, everything was back to normal and there were no regrets - no return to a longing for all of that performance. After 11 months of ownership, this love affair with my smart is as strong as ever !

Just goes to show there's only one Smart. It's a truly unique machine that one can grow to appreciate.

About that SRT8,I've been drooling over a new Challenger at the dealer nearby.

We are just the first wave of a major change in the market psychology of car ownership in the US. Small is the new big. Fuel economy is the new measure of performance. Green is in. Smart is where it's going. It's fun to be there already.

Small is the next big thing. It is not limited to small cars. The netbook computer - very small - is also very popular.

Wow, that's two months of payments for one of my Smarts. Four months if it were to be a good economy.

I remember in the old days when you can go test drive a car and NOT have to have a ride along AND they would say keep it for the day (or longer). That's what I would do when I was 19 and headed out on a date. Stop off for a test drive and bring it back about 4 hours later. All free!

Glad you enjoyed it and there are no regrets. That's all that counts.

The way I look at it, I'm just doing my part to stimulate our sluggish economy - I'm simply being patriotic . This summer the wife and I splurged on field tickets at Fenway and it was sooo worth it. Got to say, this was pretty darn close. Plus - all the money I'm saving from owning my smartie is letting me have a little more well rounded fun in life instead of putting everything into my automobile.

It would of been patriotic to rent an American car. Just Kidding!! You dun good! (southern talk and spelling) I wasn't trying to be negative, so much misinterpretation on the internet when we try to talk through words on the screen - in short that means I'm not too great at getting my point across when I write it down. .

We try to shop local as much as we can to do what we can to help the little guys stay afloat during these times. Pumping money back into the local economy is the first step in an attempt to fix what has been created.

No, no, no, I didn't think you were negative at all - but thanks for the explanation. You're right, everything gets misinterpreted these days, but you weren't. Good point though - next time it will be an American super-car !
