I think I've read /seen about the gearshift getting stuck in Park, but has anyone experienced the following: after starting up the car and being able to move the gearshift into Reverse or Drive, the transmission does not respond? My smartie is going into the dealership tomorrow, but wanted to see if there was any history of this happening before I take it in. Thanks!
Yes, You need a new CLutch plate. Your dealer most likely doesn't have one in stock. Call before you go in, and ask.
Some folks went through a lot of attemps at repairs untill they finaly got to the Clutch plate. I was one of the lucky ones who had it happen after it was finaly figured out.
Depending on how far away your delaer is should decide if you still go in tomorrow, If close, go ahead on in and do what you were going to do. If 80+ miles away, hold off untill they have a new clutch plate for you, If under 24000 miles it should be free.

If my dealer was more than 24000 miles distant, I would definitely want the repair to covered by warranty. Wonder if they'd flatbed it from 25K miles?
Man, remind me to never ask you guys for directions!
Seriously, don't take the 24,000 mile route. Just turn around and go about 900 miles, that should shave quite a few hours off your trip to the dealer. Yeesh.

You mean days?
Still a day's of driving on a bad plate. Mile #450 might not turn out well
Seriously, take it to the dealer before it refuses to go into gear.
This happened to me once. The tow truck guy hopped in my smart, stomped on the break about 3 times really hard and everything has worked fine since.
He said that the newer cars (mercedes and BMW) have the same issues at times because of an electronic switch that locks the car in gear. When the cars are new this "switch" gets stuck.... I don't know if he is right, but what he did fixed it!
Usualy turning off and back on, or even waiting a few seconds and trying again tempraroly fixed the problem.
Thanks to you and the others for your help - I'm sure this will save me tons of time and aggravation when I'm at the dealer!
This had happened to me twice in the past few weeks and I was able to drive it by doing what you described above . . . . followed by a WTF and a sigh of relief.
I have an 08 and was going to get the routine transmission upgrade so I guess they'll have it a while longer. Thanks again!
