The car comes with it; black is standard; it's the 'safety cell' that protects you.

The Tridon Safety Cell is basicly the frame of the car... So yes, you need one to hold the engine wheels and seats together... easier to drive that way.

The Black/Silver option is the paint color for the cell... the black or silver stripe you see on the photos of the smarts is the bit of the frame that is exposed, so you see the paint color.

It's basically the option to paint that part of the car Silver that's all. If you like black then all the better. As KWScott said, the frame (tridion safety cell) is always there, that is literally your car. Your not buying an upgraded frame or anything, it's just saying that you can pay them extra to paint it silver.. maybe they assume silver is a hotter choice so they charge for it. Well for me it's a marketing thing since they still have to paint the frame either way.. painting it black or silver doesn't make much of a difference but yea.. Just to clear it up for people who were confused

exoskeleton

tridion has been called «exoskeleton» by some. In earlier days in Europe, the basic pure was always and only black (à la Ford T), whereas the pulse would have a choice and the passion would always be silver. Sort of a model identifier.

I wish to carry a kayack on the roof.
Has anyone designed a rack to mount to the "tridion saftey cell "?
That is,I want to mount directly to the frame of the SMART. Of course drilling would be required !
Is there a photo available displaying the "cell" ?

Yakima racks, Q towers with, I think it's #116 brackets, 48" roundbars if you don't want them sticking out far enough for headbanging, 4 locks and your choice of kayak carrier. No drilling or any modification to the smart. This rack rests only on the tridion and is VERY strong and stable. Been using this setup for 3 years and love it. goes on or off in maybe 1 minute, no tools and if you use the locks, it won't walk away.

Don't let anyone tell you you can't put a roof rack on, because this does NOT sit on the roof.

Total cost, depending on the kayak attachment you choose, will be about $300. Dave

Awww, Bob obviously found this thread after searching for the answer to his question first - so bravo, Bob, for trying to find the answer, and thanks scdaf for giving him just what he needed. Zombie thread or not.
