I don't get it... I'm 5'11" tall and have zero difficulty with seeing traffic lights. Are you people all 7' +? In our area ALL traffic lights are on the opposite side of intersections Are yours closer to where cars stop? I remember the bad old days when lights were hung in the middle of intersection, but that was a looonnng time ago around here and w're not exactly a cutting edge locale. I remember back then having to scruntch down in ANY car to see the lights, which is why they were changed, I believe...

5' 11", HA, no wonder you DON'T have a problem; shorty!
All kidding aside, most cities have the traffic lights on the same side of the street and IF you are first in line it's almost above you ! With the smart, it puts the light right at the cross member so you can not see. Most of the time, I look through the roof to see the light

Looks like you need to move to civilization. We had lights like that around here...30 years ago.
This problem is not specific to the Smart (I don't have one yet BTW). I have the same problem with my wife's Dodge Charger.
One trick I use when I drive her car or if you're on your morning or evening commute when the sun is low in the sky is to watch the light in the opposite direction from the driver's side window. When their light turns red, that means your light is green.
In my neck of the woods, that means you still also need to look both ways and wait for all of those idiots blowing the red light for the first 3-5 second of your green light
Just like was already mentioned....it's the placement of the traffic lights are what the problem is. If you're lucky, it is completely across the intersection. If you're not, it is almost directly above you. When it is above you, you can't see it well. Most of our lights around here are that way too.

Yep, I wish we gaged the definition of civilization on the placement of traffic lights.
Not ALL of our lights are that way around here, then again - I do travel outside of the little bubble that so many other people who've never viewed any other types of traffic lights never travel out of.
Oh what the heck - I guess I'll just go sit down and have a "soda".....oh wait, that's "pop"......no, a "coke"......um, nah - a "cola".
