Picked up car yesterday and spoke to the service advisor. He said the shifter was replaced with an identical replacement shifter. There is no modified unit available, nor is there a S/B out yet on the shifter issue. He did say this is the most common reason people come in for service.

When I picked my Cabrio in early April, the dealer rep stated they had already been checking and servicing ALL the shifter boxes prior to delivery. There was a change in the shift button and knob itself apparently around January at the factory. They also stated they knew that the shifters needed to be lubed and have the cable adjusted.

We haven't had any problems with the shifter or gearbox. Works smooth as cold snot on a hot doorknob.

Over a year ago we were stuck in a parking lot at night for 30 minutes with the "stuck" gearbox, it finally worked and we drove straight home. I went on the internet and found a quxik fix. The dealer "fixed it again" when the car went in for the 10K service.

My car has 62,500 miles on it and I am STILL having problems with the shifter. The car locked up on me and I had it towed in to the dealer for repair when I first got it. Almost EVERY DAY when I get home I make a "K" turn to back into my parking spot and almost every day for 62 plus thousand miles it will NOT go into reverse. The gear lever is clearly in reverse on the console but it does NOT say ANYTHING on the dash. The other day I was stuck for about 3 minutes trying to get it to go into reverse. I finally had to turn the car off and turn it back on to get it into reverse. That is just one of the MANY problems I have had with the car. Can any one make a SIMPLE CAR like the VW bug from the 1950's or 60's? Just make a fuel injected car WITHOUT all the electronics else where on the car.

159 Imperial, Yours sounds like the Clutch Problem.

You are a bit out of warranty, but it has been replaced at 60K once before for nothing.
Check here for details Taking the smart in for service new clutch?

As frustrating as this must be for you, I just have to say ours with over 16,000 miles and over two years has been nearly flawless.

Regards,

1959 Imperial, that is the clutch issue. Get to a dealer and have the clutch replaced.

There are no cars made that don't have a load of computerized crap in them. I keep a 1986 S-15 Jimmy just for that reason. good old carburated v6 4WD and gets 20MPG. no complaints here!!
