I'd call it the service panel. Your right its not a bonnet, and no way of storing stuff in it either.
As for Defog/demist/AC on when pointing at windscreen, I'm happier that my diesel doesnt have that function. I dont want the AC on all the time, as in Scotland, its rare to have a hot day for 98% of the time! lol
I checked mine last night... and it definitely does NOT run the A/c if the selector is set to push air to the windscreen.. In the states there is an option called the "comfort package" (I don't have that).. it may be that the a/c windscreen thing is part of that option.
The A/C windscreen "feature" was not optional. It may be that smart has finally seen that people can press their own A/C button if the windows start fogging.
tvengineer - How certain are you the A/C isn't on? I heard declarations that one person's climate control didn't do it, sincerely piquing my interest. He was embarrassed to admit he informed me incorrectly. The A/C light doesn't come on but the A/C is active in most US smarts equipped with A/C.
I would buy a new control module if I was guaranteed it wouldn't do this "service."

it was late last night... i had the A/c on in the car... it was comfortable..
I set it to WINDSCREEN... and turned off the a/c button.. it got HOT in the car.. I pushed teh a/c button to ON.. it got cool in the car... then the windscreen started to fog as the glass got cold...
Don't think it was cooling without the a/.c button pushed.
My understanding of the AC going on in the defrost mode was to lube the AC unit during long periods of winter shut down. This was added to the US 451s just before the first units were shipped.

Quote:
For safety reasons, if the air distribution lever is moved precisely to "Windshield Defrost", the air conditioning switches itself on automatically with no action by the occupants in order to ensure that the windshield is defrosted and dried as quickly as possible.
In this case the function LED does not light up to indicate that the air conditioning has been activated automatically.
When the air distribution lever is moved away from the Defrost position, this function is canceled. This happens regardless of the programmed temperature or blower stage. In addition, air recirculation mode is deactivated if it is on.
tvengineer - do you want the function? I'll happily pay you to swap control modules with me!

We hve that in our 08 Petrol 451 Passion, but its no where in my 09 CDi manual which is different in layout. Old still book is in a landscape format, while the new one is Portrait.
Hey Stevie, glad to see you on here, I've noticed in piccies that have been taken of the inside of the American smarts, the gear lever has what is known as the PRINDL auto box type set up, so it looks like a standard auto box, poor buggers thought they were getting a proper auto, and I think it was marketed that way, that is why there are loads of threads on here where they are complaining that it is so jerky to drive
Ellis
been searching on here for a piccy of the gearstick to show you, hope this works, it looks completely different to our setup.

I find it the same with a manual, any manual can be jerky, it depends on HOW you drive it. I agree that it's how it looks, over here we've had it for 10 years and it's always been a big talking point so we're used to it! In all honesty although it's not ideal, it makes the car more characterful and encourages me to drive in a more socially acceptable way!
